Smartphone technology: American Red Cross offers free apps for emergencies
People with smartphones have a few new tools — and some older ones — to help them in the event of severe weather and other emergencies. The American Red Cross has rolled out a number of free applications for emergencies — fires, first aid, tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. “They’re still developing the flood one,” said Beth Dewald, executive director of the Buffalo Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Trends in rifles
It was somewhat comforting, paging through the 1980 Gun Digest Review of Custom Guns, edited by Ken Warner, with chapters by John T. Amber — the latter largely responsible for the Gun Digest editions that I devoured as a youngster. Warner and Amber are both long gone, but reading about rifles circa 1980 was like going back in time to the days when I was a young man.

Depth key for Chicago
The Minnesota Wild got a terrific effort from Josh Harding in a tough spot. Ryan Suter helped Minnesota keep Chicago’s high-powered attack in check, and the Wild still lost Game 1 to the Blackhawks. The problem for Minnesota is the same one Chicago presented all season long to the rest of the NHL, and it could become even more important as the series moves forward.
