New U.S. marshal nominated for N.D. 
A special agent with the federal Agriculture Department’s inspector general’s office is in line to be the next U.S. marshal for North Dakota.
The state’s congressional delegation said President Barack Obama has nominated Bismarck native Paul Ward to fill the state’s top law enforcement post.

Getting ready: Residents, organizations prepare to face high water 
Dickey, N.D., resident Brad Carpenter and his family are moving farm equipment, cattle and possessions to higher ground.
Last year, floodwaters surged the farm and 100-year-old home of Carpenter’s parents, Alan and Joy. For more than three months, the couple moved in with Brad and his wife, Darla.
Flooding cost the family 28 of its 80 head of cattle plus damage to the farm, the home and its contents. So this year, Brad said, they’ll be ready.

Changes coming to farm programs 
U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson warned that agriculture needs to be ready for major changes to farm support programs as the country comes to grip with the current financial situation.
Peterson, chairman of the Agriculture Committee in the House, told an audience Tuesday at the Home Grown Economy conference in Marshall that he would be launching hearings on the farm bill at the end of March, six months earlier than would be the norm.

Cattlewomen sponsoring contest 
The North Dakota Cattlewomen is sponsoring the 2010-2011 N.D. Beef Ambassador Contest March 24 at the Gateway Mall, Bismarck.
A cash prize of $500 is given to the North Dakota winner as well as an expense-paid trip to the national competition in Rapid City, S.D., in October. The contestants must be 17 but not over 20 by Jan. 1, 2011.

Turkeys rescued when barn roof collapses in Minnesota 
A second roof in the area has collapsed under a growing snow load.
Workers and family members with Gorans Brothers were able to safely move approximately 12,000 turkeys from a brooder barn northeast of Svea when its roof collapsed around 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Late Monday afternoon, a roof on a warehouse building at Perkins Lumber in Willmar collapsed.

Storms stress livestock in N.D. 
The Agriculture Department says late-January storms halted the much-delayed corn harvest in North Dakota and added stress to livestock.
The department said in its weekly crop report that power outages in western and south central North Dakota also caused worries about water availability for animals.
