Tanata completes basic training

Pfc. Andrew J. Tanata of the North Dakota Army National Guard completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., on Oct. 30, 2009, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., on Jan. 28. He attended the course of 91B-Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic and is now a member of the 817th Engineer Company (Sapper), James-town.

Graff promoted meritoriously

Pfc. Austin Graff, U.S. Marines, was recruited out of Garner, N.C., and attended recruit training at Parris Island, S.C. While attending recruit training, Graff was meritoriously promoted to his current rank for his superior performance.

N.D. Guard team sweeps event

The North Dakota National Guard biathlon team swept a national competition in Camp Ripley, Minn., over the weekend. Biathlon involves skiing and shooting. The North Dakota team won two individual 20 kilometer races and two 22.5 kilometer relay races. Spc. Jordan Becker of Devils Lake, the team coach, said it’s the best the North Dakota team has ever done.

Soldiers returning home by summer

About 550 U.S. soldiers serving with Kosovo Force 12, Multi-National Battle Group-East, will be returning home before summer. About 160 soldiers of the 231st Maneuver Task Force (231st Brigade Support Battalion), Valley City, N.D., and the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade of North Dakota are expected home in May versus the initial July or August mission end date.

A Feb. 22 Wall Street Journal report from Kabul begins: “U.S. Special Operations Forces (hunting down Taliban) ordered an air strike that killed at least 27 civilians, and the soldiers may not have satisfied rules of engagement designed to avoid the killing of innocents, Afghan and coalitions officials said.”
