N.D. sits out federal grant program

North Dakota was among a group of 10 states that didn’t take part in competition for $4.35 billion in federal education grant money. North Dakota school superintendent Wayne Sanstead said applying for “Race to the Top” money would have cost more than $250,000 just to prepare the paperwork. Sanstead said the program also favors states with charter schools and other education practices that North Dakota doesn’t follow.

W-C students get pink pancakes

W-C students get pink pancakes The elementary students at the Wimbledon-Courtenay site of the Barnes County North School District recently celebrated the 100th day of school in a unique way. The teachers cooked 100 pink pancakes, which they served to the students. The pancakes were colored pink to show support to Wimbledon-Courtenay High School senior Erin Christ, who is battling Hodgkins’ lymphoma and in observance of Coaches against Cancer.

Area schools pitch in pennies to help LLS Students from area schools have pitched in their pennies and other spare change for the Pennies for Patients program with all the funds benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “It makes the kids aware of how important a small gesture can be,” said Ellen Brown, program coordinator, Edgeley High School business and computer teacher and Future Business Leaders Association adviser.

N.D. higher ed board plans incentive program

Future budget proposals for North Dakota’s university system will include financial incentives for colleges that meet new achievement benchmarks being drawn up by the Board of Higher Education, two members said Tuesday. Richie Smith, the board’s president, and Jon Backes, its vice president, told the Legislature’s interim higher education committee that the program’s standards will be developed during the next two years for the system’s 11 public colleges.

Jamestown Public Schools had announced that school will be closed on March 12 for spring break. School will resume at the regular time on March 15. Buses will run at the regular scheduled times.

Iverson accepted ‘with distinction’

Nikki Iverson, daughter of Steve and Arlette Iverson, Jamestown, has been admitted to North Dakota State University “With Distinction.” She will enter NDSU in fall 2010, but is undecided on a major. Distinction means that NDSU is acknowledging Iverson as an honor student.

Jamestown North concerns: Teachers say enrollment, report cards, classes need addressing

Three teachers from Jamestown North presented issues and concerns they have with how the facility operates at the Jamestown Public School Board meeting Monday. The teachers, Kasey Kosel, Susanna Walker and Andy Fitzgerald, said their concerns included enrollment, out-of-order classes and issuance of report cards.

NASP tournament

The state Game and Fish Department invites all North Dakota schools participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program to register for the second annual state tournament. Jeff Long, NASP coordinator, said the 2010 tournament will be held March 6 at the NISHU Bowmen’s new indoor arch
