Performing Arts Series opens Oct. 3 with jazz
An exciting season for Jamestown’s autumn 2010 fine arts begins this month. In addition to a 2 p.m. grand opening reception on Sunday, Sept. 19, in the Reiland Art Gallery, the Performing Arts Series opens Oct. 3 with Jazz Arts Big Band. The summer show opens Sunday with a reception sponsored by the Friends of the Fine Arts and Jamestown College. Fort Seward adding fireside chats 
Every Tuesday evening between at 7 p.m. until Sept. 7, Fort Seward reconstruction members and the 20th Infantry Re-enactment Group will present fireside chats that are open to the public. Steven Reidburn will start off next week with an introduction to the fort and give its history.

Kimmerle to teach class, exhibit 
Photographer Chuck Kimmerle will teach a two-hour class today from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed immediately by a meet and greet with him at his opening reception at the Arts Center downtown. Cost for the class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Participants need to bring their own camera or call the center at 251-2496 to arrange for a camera.

Reidburn pens Fort Seward facts 
In summer Steve Reidburn is Jamestown’s vector control officer. In winter he may be driving a big snow blade, a snow truck or behind the wheel of some equipment used to clear the city’s roadways.

Learn about our local architecture in ‘Chat’ 
Sunday at 2 p.m. will be a slightly different presentation at Stutsman County Memorial Museum’s series of Front Porch Chats. Homeowners interested in learning about their own architectural styles are invited to attend a front porch chat and brief workshop I will be presenting.

Japanese art classes begin second session 
Registration is ongoing now for July 20-24 Japanese culture and fine arts techniques classes at Jamestown College. The University of North Dakota graduate school credited courses will be taught by Fulbright scholar Rebecca Young-Sletten, who teaches in Bismarck and through the graduate program at UND.

Jamestown prepares for birthday celebration for White Cloud 
Jamestown’s first albino bison, better known as White Cloud, celebrates her 14th birthday July 10, and the city will honor her next Saturday with a parade through James-town.

July art show focuses on images of vehicles 
Father’s Day may have been earlier this month but next month an art show will give them something that even the men-folk will get a kick out of.
The Arts Center has through July 31, a show of cars, trucks, tractors and any other part from a formerly drivable vehicle. No, there are no drivable cars on display, but bits and pieces from some are on display. So too are photos, sculptures, paintings, drawings and prints showing the mechanical horses of the 20th century.

Fort Seward’s flag to fly on western front 
Questions have been asked about the large and impressive American flag that flies up at the fort, and where it is this year.
A section patch has been ordered from the flag pole designer/manufacturer to enclose the flag-raising box mechanism, and that will be welded around reinforcing the pole and box, giving the entire unit more stability and strength to withstand the winds we experience here in Jamestown.

Jamestown College offering summer graduate art 
Any time groups of like-minded people gather to do or discuss something they love, it ceases to be work or a chore and turns into a group of happy people sharing stories. A week of art classes turned into just that: happy people doing and discussing Japanese art techniques and culture.

Wiese Museum to be dedicated Monday 
Monday is set aside in the United States to remember the men and women who gave their lives to protect our nation’s liberty. On the hill above the Ann Carlsen Center is an historic site that has been relegated to preservation by a number of concerned patrons, who on Memorial Day will dedicate Fort Seward’s newly renamed museum to honor one of its founding members, Sgt. E.W. Wiese, who died in 2009.
