Wisconsin Army unit returns from Iraq

People of all ages lined Main Street in Ellsworth, Wis., Thursday afternoon in welcoming the 652nd Army Reserve Engineering Company home. The unit spent about the last 10 months in Iraq as a multi-rural military bridge company, whether it’d be food, supplies or military equipment. While there, the 652nd worked with members from the 401st, a Reserve unit based in Oklahoma.

Man accused of holding girlfriend prisoner for year

A Superior man accused of holding his girlfriend as a virtual prisoner for more than a year before breaking her jaw appeared Monday in Douglas County Circuit Court. Anthony J. Machones, 23, also threatened to shoot the woman’s father, according to the criminal complaint. Machones faces felony charges of false imprisonment, threats to injure and substantial battery and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. A second status conference was scheduled for March 29.

Blake Hoffarber had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead inspired Minnesota to a 68-52 victory over No. 14 Wisconsin on Thursday night, putting a big dent in the Badgers’ Big Ten title bid. Trevon Hughes scored 19 points and Jason Bohannon added 18 for Wisconsin (19-7, 9-5), which went almost 8 minutes without scoring down the stretch and was outrebounded 41-28 for the game.

Truck goes through ice in Wisconsin PressPass

A spokesperson at the Washington County, Minn., Sheriff’s Office said Monday morning that the name of the driver whose truck fell through ice on the St. Croix River Saturday morning at Hudson won’t be released until Tuesday. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as a 57-year-old Bayport, Minn., man. The truck went through ice just north of the railroad swing bridge at about 3 a.m. Saturday.

Julie Armagost, of Baldwin, Wis., said she picked up her son, Josh, on Jan. 24 in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., after his deployment officially ended. On the way back to Baldwin, they stopped in Hudson to celebrate.
