Aftermath of tornado shows community kindness
A recent tornado near Bowbells was a deadly reminder of the power of Mother Nature. The storm ripped through the Dennis Bauer farm, wrecking everything in sight, including Bauer’s home, a number of buildings, vehicles, farm equipment and anything else in its path. Bauer survived by finding a safe place in the basement of his home, which was severely damaged by the storm. One man was killed and another man injured when the vehicle they were riding in was destroyed by the tornado.By Minot Daily News , August 30, 2010

La Niña to cause a wetter fall and winter for N.D.
She’s back. La Niña, the “little girl” whose meteorological tantrums left much of North Dakota fighting record spring flooding in 2009, has returned. How she might behave this time around is a major factor in the National Weather Service’s latest climate outlook, which calls for above-average precipitation during both fall and winter.By By Mike Nowatzki, Forum Communications Co. , August 24, 2010

The Red River Valley has seen two to three times as many severe weather events so far this year, compared to 2009.
Blame it on Mother Nature’s perfect mix of geography, atmospheric conditions and a climate pattern that’s spicing things up.

Code Red to add tornado warnings
FARGO (AP) — An emergency notification system used heavily during the 2009 spring flood in the Fargo-Moorhead area is expanded to include other weather disasters.
Residents of North Dakota’s Cass County and Minnesota’s Clay County who sign up for the “Code Reds” will be alerted by a prerecorded phone message if there’s a tornado. They also will have the option of receiving severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings.

S.D. microburst remembered
MITCHELL, S.D. — Delbert Hohn received his 15 minutes of fame a decade ago today, but he won’t celebrate the anniversary.
Hohn was one of hundreds of Mitchell residents whose lives took a turn for the worse after a massive windstorm swept through the city Aug. 5, 2000. Ten people were hurt, several homes were destroyed or damaged and more than two dozen businesses felt the wrath of the storm.
