WHAT WE THINK
What we think: Raw-milk decisions belong to consumers
Legislators are considering changing laws this year relating to the sale of raw milk — and we agree they should modify them.March 05, 2010
What we think: Publishing honor rolls recognizes students
The Jamestown Public School District doesn’t release the names of students on its honor roll. We think the district should reconsider publishing the list.
District administrators say the lists are never totally accurate, and because some grades are turned in late, the honor rolls aren’t released until three weeks after students receive their grades. They argue some of the positive enforcement expected in releasing the grades is lost in that time period.
We disagree.

What we think: Help those in Haiti, if you can
The more we hear about the devastation in Haiti, the more we realize how fortunate we are.
Not more than a year ago, we too suffered a natural disaster. Floods ravaged our cities and our countryside, leaving several homeless, but none dead.

Tourism group has eye on the future
It’s an old adage that you should never rest on your laurels and it’s good to see the Buffalo City Tourism Foundation is unwilling to relax on theirs.
The BCTF certainly has laurels to be satisfied with. Tourism grew again last year in Jamestown, despite floods, blizzards and other assorted problems. In fact, we’d like to say 2009 was the best year ever in terms of visitors to our community. We’re just not sure if we’ve ever surpassed 129,000 visitors before last year because records of the distant past aren’t available.

What we think: 2009 has helped prepare us for 2010
At the conclusion of 2009, we recognize we have many reasons to be grateful.
The year was a trying one for many families. It began like a lion, trapping us and our vehicles in a winter that lasted seven months. When it finally ended — in April — the state surged with a surplus of water in our rivers, streams, basements and main floors. Eight months after floodwaters peaked, work still remains on roads, infrastructure and individual households.

What we think: Contribute to the United Way campaign
Many charities need help in Jamestown this holiday season. Instead of picking just one or two to donate to, help the United Way so it can spread that help as far as possible.
The United Way donates to 21 area organizations ranging from the James River Humane Society to the Arts After School program. All of the groups United Way helps are groups that improve life in Jamestown for people of all ages throughout the year.

What we think: Holiday offerings are a welcome break
With the holidays fast approaching, it’s easy to get caught up in all the details of food, gifts and cards. But it’s also the time of year events and performances literally blossom throughout the area. Be sure to take in some of these wonderful holiday offerings by schools, churches and organizations.

What we think: Support the kettle campaign
Now that holiday shopping is in full swing, we’d like to encourage people to remember the hard work the Salvation Army has put in this past year. The Salvation Army’s primary fundraiser during the holiday season is the kettle campaign and we ask residents to support it.

What we think: Go see the Holiday Dazzle parade
It may be Black Friday, but with the lights and sounds of the Holiday Dazzle on Main Parade tonight, the day will end in bright contrast to a frantic day of shopping.
This is the sixth annual evening parade of lights to kick off the holiday season. More than 100 area residents have spent countless hours readying their floats for the trip up First Avenue from McElroy Park to Third Street North. The festivities begin at 7 p.m.

What we think: Dinner is way to share meaning of holiday
The 19th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner is a great opportunity for people to enjoy fellowship and a hearty meal with others. We’re thankful for those people who work every year to make this dinner happen in our community and we encourage people to enjoy the meal.

Students benefit from facing cuts on teams
Getting cut is a part of life.
Sad? Yes. And sometimes it’s even traumatic. But nevertheless, rejection is reality and something students can’t always be shielded from.
Some parents attended a meeting of the Jamestown Public School Board recently, expressing concern regarding students cut from athletic teams.
Students need opportunities to get involved, they said, and they asked the School Board to consider adding teams so more players would have a chance.
We agree that students should have more opportunities to get involved. We just don’t think “getting involved” has to be synonymous with “sports.”

What we think: Go forward with road project
The City Council will consider substituting a mill and overlay for the reconstruction of Business Loop East roadway at its next Public Works Committee. We believe that would be a mistake and a huge loss for the community.

What we think: Hospital effort deserves praise from Jamestown
The Jamestown Regional Medical Center is no longer a dream for Jamestown’s future. Wednesday’s groundbreaking ceremony at the site marked the official start of the project that is expected to be completed in 2011. We congratulate Jamestown Hospital officials and board for their work to move this project forward.

What we think: Thank veterans for service, remember the fallen
Today is Veterans Day and it’s a time to celebrate with those who have given us the gift of our continuing freedom. These are the servicemen and women who came safely home to us that we appreciate today.
It’s a day to honor the many contributions of those who have served their country in the military. It’s also a day to remember our sons and daughters who made the ultimate sacrifice for us.

What we think: It’s time to recycle some county roads
The verdict’s in. Stutsman County must do something about its roads.
Two hundred eighty-eight miles of paved road are in Stutsman County. However, the county’s $700,000 per-year road budget can only afford to maintain about 90 miles of them.
