During August and September, the National Park Service is inviting the public to participate in a series of public meetings across 11 states to discuss the future of Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

Zebra mussel discovered in state 
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has confirmed the presence of a zebra mussel veliger in the Red River between Wahpeton and Breckenridge, Minn. The veliger, the microscopic free-swimming (young) stage of the zebra mussel, was isolated from a recent routine plankton sample taken at Kidder Dam.

Herbicides destroy rare orchids on federal land 
FARGO — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the killing of endangered flowers near Lisbon by herbicides.
About 200 Western prairie fringed orchids were destroyed in the Sheyenne National Grasslands, U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Bryan Stotts said Thursday. He said the Ransom County Weed Board was spraying in the area last week.

Pelican population at N.D. refuge small but healthy 
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The federal Fish and Wildlife Service says the number of American white pelicans that returned to nest at a refuge in south central North Dakota is the second-lowest in two decades.

Enforcement officers out on Missouri River 
Law enforcement officers patrolling the Missouri River will continue to have an enhanced presence in the Bismarck-Mandan area this summer.
Robert Timian, North Dakota Game and Fish Department chief of enforcement, said last summer’s initial effort of having district game wardens and paid volunteers from county and city law enforcement agencies in the area was successful.

Nonprofit must sell land in corporate farming case 
A Minneapolis nonprofit that develops duck nesting grounds must sell a 949-acre tract in North Dakota because of state restrictions on corporate ownership of agricultural land, the North Dakota Supreme Court said in an opinion released Thursday.
