Open water fishing ideas for upcoming season
Fifty-degree air temperatures, drizzle, and receding snow has reminded me that the open water fishing season is fast approaching. Following are some fishing ideas that I am going to be sure to keep in mind when I’m on the water this year.By By Bob Jensen, Fishing the Midwest , March 12, 2010

Rivers good for walleyes early in spring
Although there is still plenty of ice-fishing going on, some anglers throughout the Midwest are already enjoying open water fishing. They’re on rivers, and they’re fishing for walleyes. Walleyes will eat a bait year ‘round. While they will get more aggressive later in the year as the water temperatures rise, right now can be a good time to get in on the action. The walleyes are willing to bite, they can be found in good numbers in certain areas, and it’s always fun to get the boat in the water for the first open water fishing trip of the year. Here’s how you can get in on the action.By By Bob Jensen, Fishing the Midwest , March 05, 2010
Mixing outdoors and technology
Is technology steering the future of the outdoors? The obvious answer is yes, but the direction is not always so clear. Using a GPS device to mark a sandbar that might be a safety hazard to boaters is a good direction. Using a computer linked to the Internet linked to a webcam watching over a deer feeder in a distant state, allowing someone to “hunt” a farmed deer from their office, is not a good direction.By By Doug Leier, North Dakota Outdoors , March 05, 2010

Time to start preparing for summer fishing
Cabin fever is starting to set in among anglers. More and more this season, it seems like anglers are really looking forward to open water fishing. Although there is still lots of great ice-fishing ahead, let’s talk about some of the things you can be doing right now to make your open water fishing more productive this year.

Make some time to go out and fish
I woke up this morning to yet another snowstorm. Schools are canceled as is my ice fishing trip. Most anglers look forward to every open water fishing season with lots of excitement and anticipation, but it seems the open water fishing season of 2010 has even more excitement associated with it. That’s great: We should be excited about the opportunity to go fishing. Fishing is a wonderful thing to experience by yourself or with someone. With the way things have been the past couple of years, all of us need something to look forward to.

Sometimes just the basics work best on the ice
The “Dog Days” of winter for some begin in December and aren’t officially over until the last drift of snow disappears from the shelterbelt.
I know, Dog Days is generally a summer term referring to a lingering hot and humid period in August, but it also seems appropriate for a long stretch of midwinter weather that just doesn’t want to break for the positive.
