Fall fishing right around the corner
It’s hard to believe, but another fall fishing season is just around the corner. Autumn can provide the best fishing of the year for both numbers of fish and trophy fish.By By Bob Jensen, Fishing the Midwest , August 27, 2010
Don’t forget to go fishing in the fall
It comes as no surprise that when August begins losing to September, for many North Dakota residents hunting starts to win out over fishing in the competition for free-time activities.By By Doug Leier, North Dakota Outdoors , August 27, 2010
Finding food equals finding fish
From now until ice-up, there is one very basic key to fishing success: You’ve got to be fishing where the food is. Actually, as soon as the spawn was over finding what the fish wanted to eat was a very important consideration. As the summer progresses and we get into the fall months, staying near what the fish want to eat is very important. Following are some examples and how you can capitalize when you encounter some of these situations. Let’s say you’re on a body of water that has lots of white bass. White bass are fun to catch: They’re great fighters and when they’re on the bite, they’ll eat almost anything you throw to them.By By Bob Jensen, Fishing the Midwest , August 20, 2010

Fly rod maker going strong at 79
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — When you purchase a handmade bamboo fly rod from Dave Norling, you’re buying a piece of his personality.
Well, you might not have to purchase it at all. If you are friends with the Minneapolis rod maker and philosopher, he might just give you one.
Countless beautifully crafted fly rods have ended up in the hands of Norling’s friends (or at fundraising auctions) simply because someone asked to look at one. When one of Norling’s friends was headed to Alaska, the rod maker put a rod in his hand and said, “I would love for someone to catch some big fish with this.”

Salmon fishing in British Columbia
The trip began with an 850-mile drive from our home in Bozeman, Mont., to Vancouver, B.C. A day later we boarded a cramped Beechcraft 900 plane for the one-hour flight to Port Hardy on the northern end of Vancouver Island, then transferred to a DeHaviland Beaver floatplane.
Laurie, who never had been in a floatplane before, was nervous about the flight, but it went without incident and soon the pilot landed the plane in a cove near Pendleton Island located between Darby Channel and Rivers Inlet — the location of Legacy Lodge, where we would be spending the next four days.

Catching and releasing a good debate to have
Each year from summer to winter I’m peppered with reports, complaints and discussions about “fish hogs,” a less-than-flattering tag used by some anglers to describe other anglers who supposedly take more than their fair share of fish, even though they are not exceeding the daily limit.
I’ve seen pictures and heard stories, and honestly I don’t discount what anyone witnesses. But in the back of my mind I usually have more questions than answers. If the limit is five fish per day, then who’s to say which anglers should or shouldn’t take and keep five fish?

Avoid the dog days of summer
Lots of anglers refer to this time of year as the “Dog-Days of Summer.”
I don’t know where that phrase came from, but many people who fish believe that “Dog-Days” equate to poor fishing. While it is true that fishing during the hottest time of the year can be challenging, the fact is that there are still lots of fish to catch. Their metabolism is high due to warmer water, so they eat more. If we put a bait in front of them at the right time and in the right manner, they’re going to eat that bait. Here are some things you can do to catch fish during the dog-days of summer.
First of all, wear sun-screen, and make sure it’s of a high-enough SPF (sun protection factor) to be of help. Wearing a “2” SPF really doesn’t do much good.
