Grafton beaten in title game PressPass

GRAFTON — Casselton defeated Grafton 7-4 here Sunday in the championship game of the North Dakota Class B American Legion baseball tournament. Grafton scored all its runs in the bottom of the first inning, three on a Todd Paulson home run, with Cory Blanchard’s triple driving in the fourth run.

Minot wins Class A Legion title PressPass

Minot is again the state Legion champion. The Vistas banged out 14 hits to beat Bismarck 8-5 in the Class A championship game on Sunday, finishing the tournament with a 4-1 record and winning the state title for the fourth time in five years.

LaMoure to face familiar challenge PressPass

GRAFTON — LaMoure is defending North Dakota Class B American Legion baseball state champion and has won two of the last three state titles. In 2007, it had to come through the loser-out bracket to win; it faces the same challenge after a second-round loss to Grafton. Grafton handed LaMoure a 6-2 setback here Thursday in the winners’ bracket second round Thursday at the state tournament.

Jamestown entered the ninth inning in a 4-all knot but Williston’s Oliver Sogard slapped a single up the right side to score two runs and lift the Keybirds to a 6-4 win on Thursday at the state Class A American Legion baseball tournament in Bismarck.

LaMoure’s Zach Stemen didn’t rack up a lot of strikeouts on the mound during Saturday’s championship game of the Section 2 American Legion Baseball Tournament, but the starting pitcher was definitely effective. Stemen pitched all seven innings and allowed just one hit to the host team, as Post 19 shutout Edgeley 1-0 at the Edgeley Sports Complex.

The Eastern Division Tournament got off to an ugly start for Post 14 on Thursday at Jack Williams Stadium in Fargo. Devils Lake broke a 5-all tie with one run in the top of the 11th inning to beat Jamestown 6-5 and send the Eagles into a loser-out game against Grand Forks, which started at 8:15 p.m. The winner of the Jamestown/Grand Forks game qualifies for state.

Cinderella with spikes: 1958 Drayton Legion to be inducted into NDSHOF Long before “Hoosiers” made nearly $30 million on the big screen, North Dakota had its own version of the famed basketball underdogs, only in baseball. Fifty-two years ago the 1958 Drayton American Legion baseball team bucked Class B and challenged into Class A, where they won the Eastern Division and then the state tournament here in Jamestown. They beat Fargo, Grand Forks and Jamestown in the division tournament, before going 3-0 at McElroy Park, with wins over Williston and two against the home team. That 1958 team will be in Jamestown again this weekend when they’re inducted into the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame.
