Nathan has ligament tear in elbow The Minnesota Twins suddenly have a glaring concern about closing games for the first time since Joe Nathan took over in 2004. Tests on Nathan’s right throwing elbow have revealed a significant tear in the ulnar collateral ligament, an injury that could require season-ending Tommy John surgery. Jimmies split doubleheader

Jamestown College rallied late in the opener and St. Francis (Ill.) turned the tables in Game 2 as they split a twinbill on Tuesday in Ormond Beach, Fla. Tied 3-all into the bottom of the seventh in Game 1, the Jimmies got a game-winning single from Jeremy Newman to win 4-3. They led 6-5 after 4 1/2 innings in the nightcap, but St. Francis exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth to end it early 16-6 and get the split.

On a tough day for the Minnesota Twins, third base prospect Danny Valencia provided something positive. Valencia hit the go-ahead home run in the eighth inning, and the Twins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 on Tuesday after learning All-Star closer Joe Nathan has a torn ligament in his throwing elbow.

Jimmies split in sunny Florida

The Jimmies were on both ends of a pair of blowouts on Monday as they continued their spring trip in Florida. Phil Curtis fired six strong innings in the opener and the Jimmies pounded out 14 hits in an 11-1 win over St. Francis (Ind.) on a sunny, 70-degree day in the Sunshine State.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire had just one complaint, and it had nothing to do with Minnesota’s performance in a 5-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. Gardenhire’s problem had to do with the postgame meal for the 70-mile trip back to the Twins’ training complex in Fort Myers.

Jimmies win Florida openers Alex Kreis was dominant on the mound again as the Jamestown College baseball team opened its spring trip to Florida with a sweep on Sunday. Jeremy Newman clubbed a grand slam in Game 1, and Kreis fired 6 scoreless innings in the nightcap for his second win of the season as the Jimmies swept Marion (Ind.) 9-7 and 3-0 in Ormond Beach, Fla.

Twins drop spring opener to Red Sox

The last time Josh Beckett and Nick Blackburn pitched, their teams lost the second game of a pair of three-game sweeps in AL division series. The stakes were much lower on Thursday night when the Boston Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1 on Mark Wagner’s tiebreaking single in the eight in the spring training opener for both teams.

Hubert’s opening new branch near new park

A mainstay for Minnesota Twins fans is opening a new branch near the new ballpark. The Star Tribune reports that Hubert’s, the sports bar that sits in the shadow of the namesake Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, will open a second branch at Target Center on April 2.
