Class B roundup: No. 1-ranked Cards cruise vs. Midkota

Top-ranked Carrington took care of Midkota in surprisingly easy fashion on Thursday night in a District 7 match-up in Binford. The Cardinals (14-1) allowed just seven points in the first quarter and nine in the second to lead 33-16 at the break and they never looked back. Becca Scherr was spot on from deep, drilling six three-pointers for the defending state champions. Emily Thompson added 14 for the winners and Sierra Rosenau added 13.

Class B roundup: Bearcats roll past Rockets

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets hung tough with the No. 1-ranked Class B boys’ basketball team for three quarters in New Rockford on Tuesday night. But in the end it was Jacob Hagler’s 36 points for North Star that lifted the Bearcats past the Rockets 71-58. Hagler scored 13 of his 36 in the first period, and he scored another 13 in the final frame.

Midkota upped its record to 12-1 on the campaign with a 59-46 District 7 road victory in Fessenden over the Harvey-Wells County Hornets on Monday. Shaye Ronningen poured in 21 points for the Mustangs, who scored 20 first-quarter points. Callie Harding added 13 and Emily Berge 11.

Carrington is back on top of the Class B girls’ basketball poll. The Cardinals got five of the 14 first-place votes and edged out Kindred for the No. 1 spot. The Vikings handed previous No. 1 Central Cass its first loss of the season last week.

It took until game No. 14 on the schedule to get it, but the 2011-12 Edgeley-Kulm girls’ basketball team is winless no longer. Edgeley-Kulm’s Jennifer Erickson and Miranda Brandenburg combined to drill five three-pointers and score 29 points, helping E-K get past Litchville-Marion-Montpelier 58-29 in Marion on Thursday night and improve to 1-13 on the season.

Melvin Langstaff was back at it Tuesday night. The Warwick standout scored 10 of his 38 points in overtime as the Warriors nipped Four Winds-Minnewaukan 72-67 in overtime. Tied 59-all after four quarters, Warwick outscored the Indians 13-8 in overtime for the District 7 win.
