Workers close to finish at Spiritwood Station

Construction is wrapping up on the coal-fired power plant at the Spiritwood Industrial Park. The process follows plans for Spiritwood Station’s commissioning and startup beginning in August. The Great River Energy plant will produce 76 megawatts of electricity with an additional 23 megawatts during peak demands. The steam from the plant will also be used as a heat source by the Cargill Malting plant and possibly in future ethanol or bio-energy plants that could be located at the site.

BCN bond issue to return: Voters in the school district will again decide whether to build a new school in Leal area

Voters in the Barnes County North Public School District will go to the polls for the second time in seven months to decide a school bond issue. An election has been scheduled for April 19 on a $14.5 million bond issue to build a centralized school. The same issue failed on Sept. 20 when it received just less than 50 percent of the vote. It needed a 60 percent majority to pass.

GRE construction continues: Two years of cold, snowy weather have hampered efforts About 420 construction workers are building inside and out on Great River Energy’s Spiritwood Station in a race to meet the Oct. 1 online date for the power plant. And for the second winter, snow and cold weather hamper the work on the coal-fired power and heat plant near Spiritwood. Dennis Pozarnsky, GRE construction site manager, said within about 10 days, the number of workers will climb to more than 500 as temperatures begin to warm.

Spiritwood Station contractors organize heavy-duty food drive Area residents new to town are holding a fundraiser as a way to say “thank you” to the people who welcomed them here. The 460 employees working at Great River Energy’s Spiritwood Station construction site are raising money and non-perishable food items for Community Action’s food pantry. As of Wednesday, the five crafts on the project — administrators, pipe fitters, iron workers, boilermakers/millwrights and civil crew — had raised about $1,800 in cash and collected more than 4,000 food items, said Dee Pickering, administrator of document control.
