The opening night of the 2010 Class B boys’ Stutsman County Tournament has come and gone, and according to the seeding there were no surprises at the Jamestown Civic Center on Thursday night.
Top-seeded LaMoure rolled past Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal 63-32 in the first quarterfinal of the evening, and then it was fourth-seeded and two-time defending champion Central Prairie’s turn with a 65-55 win over Edgeley-Kulm.
In the night bracket, No. 2-seeded Ellendale skated past Midkota 61-40, and No. 3-seeded Carrington wrapped up Day 1 with a 54-37 win over Kidder County.

Information released Thursday by Kidder County assistant state’s attorney Kathleen Trosen shows Doug Howard was charged Tuesday with three counts of corrupt practices relating to interfering with elections and one count of disorderly conduct.

It’s a feeling long past due for Kidder County boys’ basketball coach Paul Olson, but the wait is finally over.
The Pirates, for the first time since 1991, have extended their season to the state’s big dance in Minot. Olson was part of the 1991 fourth-place finishing Kidder County team — then referred to as Steele-Dawson — as an assistant, but this marks the first time the Pirates advanced to the state tournament under Olson as a head coach.
Kidder County, formerly Steele-Dawson, has played in three of the last four girls state Class B basketball tournaments. Eli Benz has been there for all three.
The career highlight for the 5-foot, 11-inch senior forward was leading the Pirates to a 45-43 win over Fordville-Lankin-Park River in the 2008 state championship game. She was named tournament MVP that season.

A 9-0 run by Kidder County to end the third period was too much for the Napoleon Imperials to overcome during Tuesday’s Region 3 semifinal match-up at the Jamestown Civic Center. The Pirates’ Norm Nicholson, Wes Nicholson and Mike Kalianoff all hit double digits in scoring, led by Norm Nicholson’s 13, and the Pirates advanced to the state’s Sweet 16 with a 53-39 victory over the Imperials.
Tied 38-38 after three periods, 5-foot-5 junior guard Shauna Long put the Standing Rock Warriors on her back.
The all-stater buried a pair of three-pointers and racked up 15 of her game-high 28 points in the final frame, sending Standing Rock past defending state champion Kidder County 60-59 in the opening round of the state Class B girls’ basketball tournament on Thursday at the MSU Dome.
