ROME, Ga. (AP) — Jimmy Coy accounted for 294 yards and two touchdowns, Mark Williams knocked down a fourth-down pass in the end zone with 2 minutes left and St. Xavier won its first NAIA title with a 24-20 victory over defending champion Carroll on Saturday.

Based on their ranking, the Vikings (8-1) should sew up a spot in the NAIA playoffs if they can beat Robert Morris (Ill.) on Saturday. Robert Morris College (Ill.) is in its first season of having a football team. They lost to Mayville State 21-18 on Aug. 27.
Valley City State’s 3-1 start to the season has them in the NAIA top 25.
The Vikings are ranked 23rd in the latest poll, the lone team from the state and one of just two from the Dakotas. Dakota Wesleyan, S.D. (3-0) is ranked 18th. The Vikings’ lone loss came to 11th-ranked Morningside, Iowa (3-1) in their season-opener.
Multi-event standouts Sarah Skipper and Josh Ewalt are in contention for All-American honors, and Katie Conlon also is right where she needs to be.
Skipper is seventh with 2,794 points after the 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meters in the heptathlon at the NAIA National Meet in Marion, Ind.
She is well within striking distance of a top 6 finish, and All-American honors.
