Education loses good advocates
When three good members of the state Board of Higher Education call it quits, North Dakotans who care about the university system should be concerned. The departure of Michael Haugen, Jon Backes and Claus Lemke (Haugen won’t seek a second term; Backes did not seek a second term; Lemke resigned) further indicates that the manipulation and attempted micro-management of higher education by leaders in the Legislature are among factors harming the system. Guidelines first steps for budget
The reaction to North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple’s budget guidelines for the executive agencies under his control has been, shall we say, a tad extreme. Some of it is political claptrap, such as state Sen. Ryan Taylor’s, D-Towner, reaction that the governor’s guidelines “fall short of reality.” Taylor, the Democratic-NPL candidate for governor, surely knows better, but it’s a political season, and he’s obligated to take shots at his opponent when the opportunity arises.

Bullion Butte has been saved
“Our hike soon brought us to the top of Bullion Butte,” writes Mark Gonzalez of the North Dakota Geological Survey, recalling a boyhood hike to what might be the most scenic spot in the state.
“We gazed at the Badlands sprawled hundreds of feet below. The wind stirred clothes, hair and some primeval niche within our souls.

Minot takes big step in protection process
No one is claiming the flood plan recently approved by the Minot City Council is perfect, or for that matter, even complete. But the city needed to get behind a plan in order to keep the years-long process of building flood protection from Burlington to Velva, and the council has done its part.

Reservation oil issues look familiar
The explosion of oil exploration and development on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in western North Dakota looks a lot like the rest of the Bakken play — rapid growth of quality crude oil production, an increase in good-paying jobs and a scramble to maintain roads and find housing for workers.
