Stenehjem: Law backs putting omitted Libertarian on ballot
BISMARCK — Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s paperwork mistake shouldn’t keep a Libertarian candidate for the state Public Service Commission off the November ballot, Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said Thursday. Stenehjem declined a request from state Sen. Libertarian Party supporters have turned in petitions seeking the party’s own column on North Dakota’s statewide ballot. Secretary of State Al Jaeger said Libertarian Party backers need signatures from at least 7,000 North Dakota voters. City rejects ballot proposal
Apparently bothered by the lack of results at the first meeting of the subcommittee on use of the 1 percent sales tax the mayor wanted to put the issue on the June ballot. The vote at the City Council’s Finance and Legal Committee meeting Tuesday failed 2-2, with Mayor Clarice Liechty and Councilman Charlie Kourajian voting in favor and Councilmen Ken Schulz and Pat Nygaard voting against. Court won’t give lawyer ballot spot
North Dakota’s Supreme Court has refused to order Secretary of State Al Jaeger to list a Bismarck attorney as a fall challenger to incumbent Justice Daniel Crothers. A Dickinson district judge and four retired judges handled the case after all five Supreme Court justices disqualified themselves from hearing it, the case docket shows. Proposed ballot measures won’t make deadlines
Proposed ballot measures that would affect North Dakota’s child custody laws and the qualifications for state school superintendent have fallen short of qualifying for a statewide vote. Once a proposed initiative petition is approved for circulation, advocates have one year to gather the minimum number of signatures they need, Secretary of State Al Jaeger said.
