Minn. wagon trip to raise funds for hospice

Minn. wagon trip to raise funds for hospice Rufus and Rowdy are finally trained and harnessed and a date for takeoff is set. Teamsters Joe Dahlby and Earl Speckman will hitch up those mules to a covered wagon and head for Joice, Iowa — by way of Granada, Minn. Dahlby said he has been planning the trip for several years, spurred by a three-pronged passion. Joice, population 221, is his hometown. His father homesteaded in 1910 near Watford City, N.D., with a team of mules. And, most important, the trek will raise funds for local hospice and palliative care programs.

The Northern Lights Council, Boy Scouts of America and North Dakota first lady Lady Betsy Dalrymple, the 2013 Scouting for Food chair, announced Tuesday that area Scouts will be going door-to-door March 16-23. The Scouts will be distributing Scouting for Food door hangers beginning on March 16 and will return to their same area and collect the donated food on March 23.

The first Heart Redneck Triathlon held Feb. 16 in Jamestown raised $1,000, according to Rayette Brown, WomenHeart support network coordinator in Jamestown. More than half of the proceeds will stay local in a separate saving account at First Community Credit Union under Rayette Brown/Heart Triathlon, she said.

The $2,863 check represented the amount raised at the checkout register through Dec. 30, 2012, and also a Hugo’s donation. The Salvation Army also had a red kettle at the store from Dec. 17-24. The kettle raised $5,948.

Polar Plunge set for March 2

The 2013 Special Olympics North Dakota Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 2 at the James River Family YMCA, 904 Seventh St. NE, on the Jamestown College campus. Last year the Polar Plunges held in Jamestown, Grand Forks, Fargo and Minot raised $47,000, according to Katie Allen, SOND director of special projects.
