ORISKA, N.D — Watching as their church burned to the ground Monday night, one boy whose family goes to Zion Lutheran turned to another young man and asked the thorny question. Why would God let this happen? The other boy’s response, recalled Tuesday by fellow Zion member Joan Wolsky, was an optimistic answer to the enduring theological concern: “He wants us to have bigger Sunday school rooms,” the youth said.

Vandals strike rural Hankinson church just before Easter

St. John’s Lutheran Church of Belford Township parishioners were preparing to host sunrise Easter service. But instead of enjoying breakfast at the church, they were speedily cleaning up broken glass and debris in the chapel, basement and storage room. Vandals are suspected of using a bat to break six windows in the church overnight Saturday.

Egypt Christians mark mournful Christmas Eve CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s Christians packed churches Thursday for mournful Christmas Eve Masses, weeping and donning black in place of colorful holiday clothes, under a heavy security cordon by police out of fear of another attack like the New Year’s suicide bombing of a church that killed 21 people. At church gates around the country, police and church staff checked the IDs of those entering the services — and their wrists, where many Egyptian Christians bear the tattoo of a cross.

ELLSWORTH, Wis. — In looking inward while between pastors, an Ellsworth church congregation has been looking outward, too. After the retirement of the Rev. Harlen Menk this past spring, English Lutheran Church members hired “Church Doctor Ministries” through the Lutherans’ Northwest Synod in Chetek to help assess the congregation’s present condition and determine its future direction. Man accused of setting fire to church

DICKINSON, N.D. — Authorities here have arrested a man for allegedly burglarizing and setting fire to a church this morning, one of two church fires local officials had to simultaneously battle. Joshua Whitworth, 21, of Dickinson, was taken into custody and charged with burglary, arson and possession of stolen property in connection with a burglary and fire at the Church of Christ, according to the Dickinson Police Department.
