The snow let up in North Dakota on Wednesday but it left trouble behind — rooftops in danger of collapse and bitter cold wind chill factors.
In Bismarck, a 61-year-old man was pronounced dead after he was found lying next to his snowblower in his driveway. His name and the cause of death were not immediately released.

After the price of commodities dropped and bad weather snowed in employees, Jamestown’s branch of the 4 R’s Recycling Center closed with no definite plans to reopen.
Behind on shipping sorted materials, owners Gary and Helen Rosenau may sell 4 R’s but as of Wednesday, no deal was complete, said Charlie Kourajian, recycling advocate and James-town City Council member.
The recycling center is important, Kourajian said, because it keeps materials out of the landfill. Questions regarding its future should be answered by the end of the month, he said.
The Fargo area has seen its fifth day care closing in the last 18 months that took parents by surprise.
The latest to close is the Packer Playland day care in West Fargo, which locked its doors Monday morning as parents came to drop off their children.
The Nash elementary school has just nine students this year, and with only six expected next year, its fate seemed clear.
“There just comes a time when the social education isn’t going to be there,” said Linda Johnston, the only full-time teacher and administrator at the school for the past two years.
One of North Dakota’s most recognizable small family businesses is closing after nearly two decades of creating handmade products that drew national attention and serving as a blueprint for farm-based companies.

An elementary school in Regent for students in grades five through eight is being closed, though the gym will stay open.
The Mott-Regent School Board made that decision in a 4-3 vote this week, split along community lines. Board Chairwoman Heather Hertz cast the tie-breaking vote, saying: “We amputate now or we amputate later.”
Fourth Avenue Southeast will be closed today between Second Street Southeast and Eighth Street Southeast. The closure will make room for construction work and will begin at 6 a.m. and is expected to last until about 4 p.m.
Zero anger, a small sampling of sadness and a huge dose of acceptance.
That’s the difference between the final day at Bisbee-Egeland School on Thursday and most school closings in recent years.
Several people used the same two-word bottom line: “It’s time.”
A Jamestown business standard for nearly two decades closed its doors this week. Dakota Western Wear, which started business as The Mart in the Park Plaza Mall, closed its current operation in the Buffalo Mall at the end of business on Wednesday, said store owner Maynard Boeder.
“We’ve enjoyed doing business in Jamestown,” he said. “The Jamestown community, the chamber, the mall management have all been very good to us. I will miss interaction with the people the most.”
