N.D. to receive $19.6 million in community grants

North Dakota will receive $19.6 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program passed by Congress last fall to help communities deal with the housing crisis.

Grain dryer total loss after fire

Nine firefighters from the Jamestown Rural Fire Department responded at 8:49 p.m. Thursday to a grain dryer fire at 7409 46th St. S.E. The dryer and its contents were a total loss, according to Perry Kuss, captain of the rural fire department. Sharon Haas, owner of the property, called for the fire department after efforts to extinguish the blaze were unsuccessful.

Storage units destroyed by blaze Monday night

Eight garage units and the items stored within them were damaged in a fire which started around 9:30 p.m. Monday. The units, which are rented mostly by tenants who live in the apartment building at 1212 10th Ave. N.E., looked frozen stiff Tuesday, from water doused upon them by the 36 Jamestown Fire Department firefighters and seven units that responded.

Industrial hemp production licenses accepted by N.D. ag department

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for 2009 industrial hemp production licenses. “The applications are due Jan. 1,” said Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson. “Although the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration continues to prevent holders of state licenses from growing industrial hemp, NDDA remains committed to fully implementing state laws authorizing the production, processing and sale of this crop in North Dakota.”

N.D. DOT issues travel alert in Buxton area

The North Dakota Department of Transportation issued a travel alert at around 4 p.m. Friday informing motorists to use caution as they travel north on Interstate 29 from Buxton north to Drayton. The alert has been issued due to reduced visibility from blowing snow and slippery conditions on the roadway.

Jamestown fire departments awarded grants

Sens. Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan and Rep. Earl Pomeroy, all D-N.D., announced Wednesday that federal grants totaling $218,173 have been awarded to the Jamestown Fire Department and the Jamestown Rural Fire Department to help purchase and improve firefighting equipment.

Marion Rural Fire Department awarded grant

Sens. Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad and Rep. Earl Pomeroy announced Friday that federal grants totaling $581,048 have been awarded to five North Dakota fire departments to help boost their ability to respond to emergencies in their communities. The Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grants are aimed at enhancing response capabilities and allowing departments to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public. The grants are used for training, to conduct health and safety programs, and to buy equipment and response vehicles. Among the fire departments in North Dakota receiving the grants was the Marion Rural Fire Department which was awarded $80,275.

N.D. approves spraying roads with oil wastewater

North Dakota’s health department says it will allow salty oil field wastewater to be sprayed on roads as a deicer or for dust control even though oil companies and environmental groups have questions about it.
