Speed demon Marler set for state

Speed demon Marler set for state Jamestown High School swimming star Willy Marler does not lack confidence. And for good reason. Just a sophomore, Marler has proven to be the top sprinter in the state this season, and can settle any debate on the topic once and for all this weekend at the state swimming and diving championships in Grand Forks, beginning with the prelims today at the Hyslop Sports Center on the campus of UND.

Ostlie beats own IM record, Marler notches other region title for Blue Jays

Landon Ostlie lowered his own school record in the 200 individual medley to lead the Blue Jay swimmers and divers at the West Region meet on Saturday in Mandan. Ostlie’s time of 2:03.48 beat his previous best of 2:04.99 as the junior standout won the event and placed second in the 100 butterfly as Jamestown placed fourth of out six teams with 245 points.

JHS teams receive scholar award

The Jamestown High School girls’ swimming and diving team and the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams have each received the North Dakota High School Activities Association Team Scholar Award. Teams must maintain a grade point average of 3.2 to qualify for the award.

Dynamic diver: Walsh shines in senior season Finishing strong is a common line from athletes who are at the end of the road. Jamestown High School diver Kaitlin Walsh is Example A of the old cliché. The Blue Jay senior closed out the West Region meet last weekend in Minot with what JHS diving coach Dave Tews called, “three of the best dives I’ve ever seen.”

Braves swim past Jays

Three different Blue Jays won events and one relay team also touched first in a road dual against Mandan Tuesday night. The Braves won the dual thanks to eight first-place finishes, 113-73. Erin Hart, Kamie Wagar and Kaitlin Walsh led the way for the Blue Jays.

Jays top Huskies The Blue Jays left the Huskies in their wake. Jamestown High School posted a 128-52 dual victory over Wahpeton on Thursday at the Jamestown High School pool.

Jays top Deacons

Jays top Deacons In order to get a couple of extra days off during homecoming weekend, the Blue Jays had to beat Fargo Shanley in their dual Thursday at the JHS pool. It got a little tense along the way, but they pulled it off with a 102-84 win over the Deacons, a team the Blue Jays outnumber, which is rare. The Deacons have just 11 swimmers and three drivers, but clearly have some quality, too.

Blue Jays go 1-3 in duals

The Blue Jays went 1-3 in duals on Friday in Bismarck. Highlighted by a 1-2-3 finish on the diving board and a 1-3 in the backstroke, the Jays defeated Bismarck handily 119-61 and had competitive losses to Century (96-89), Grand Forks Central (103-82) and Grand Forks Red River (96-89).

JHS Swimming and Diving: Hart, Walsh lead Blue Jays

Erin Hart picked up a pair of second-place finishes and Kaitlin Walsh had another good day on the diving board to lead Jamestown at the Spartan Invite on Saturday at Fargo North High pool. Hart was second only to Fargo Shanley standout Lexie Halberstadt in both the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.

Jays win six events

Willy Marler and Landon Ostlie each went 4-for-4 on Saturday to lead Jamestown in its dual against Fargo North. Marler and Ostlie each swept their two individual events and two relays for the Blue Jays, who lost the dual 108-75, but won six of the 11 races overall. The final spread was primarily due to the results on the diving board where North went 1-2-3. The Blue Jays do not have a diver.

JHS swimmers, divers honored

Freshman all-state swimmer Erin Hart has been named Jamestown High School’s MVP. Hart, who also was cited for the Most Outstanding Season, Hardest Worker and James Vondergeest Memorial Swimming & Diving, finished the season with 446.5 points to lead the team. Hart also earned all-West Region honors and was a first-team all-state choice.

Hart, Walsh named first team all-state

In first-team all-state qualifying time, Jamestown freshman Erin Hart captured third in the 100 backstroke finals during the high school girls’ swimming and diving state championships Saturday in Mandan. Hart set a personal best in the event during the prelims on Friday, when she completed the race with a time of 1:01.55. She backed up that performance in the finals with a 1:01.68, which was good enough to place her third on the podium.

Walsh, Hart lead Blue Jays

Walsh, Hart lead Blue Jays Kaitlin Walsh and Erin Hart each won events to lead Jamestown High School at the Blue Jay Invitational on Saturday. Walsh and her fellow divers were very good again, while Hart added a third to go with her first as the home team finished fourth in the seven-team meet with 323 points.

The competition was stiff at the Fargo Invite on Saturday, but Jamestown managed to hold its own with 115 points in the 13-team meet. The Blue Jays had seven individual point-scorers on the day, placing 10th in the 13-team meet.
