Level the sales-tax playing field
Greg Danz, proprietor of Zandbroz, faces an invisible wall that he and many other merchants face, whether located downtown or in a mall. Editorial: School Board needs to revisit policies
Jamestown Public Schools should hire the best available teachers, regardless of who they are related to — but a policy should be in place to protect against nepotism and potential “good ole’ boy” hiring decisions.By The Jamestown Sun Editorial Board , May 06, 2013
Federal priorities have us confused
Remember years ago when North Dakota lawmakers approved legislation allowing farmers in the state to grow industrial hemp, a distant cousin of marijuana that contains only tiny traces of THC, the psychoactive element of the plant? Remember the federal government’s reaction?By Minot Daily News , May 03, 2013
More should sign up for CodeRed here
Every summer, North Dakotans can be certain they’ll have to put up with road construction and severe weather. The road construction is predictable and steady, but the weather is anything but. These storms are simply a fact of living in the Northern Plains.May 01, 2013
Erdrich richly deserves award
Louise Erdrich richly deserves her selection as the latest recipient of the North Dakota Rough Rider Award, which honors current or former North Dakotans who were influenced by the state and achieved national recognition in their field. That’s certainly the case with Erdrich, who grew up in Wahpeton and has won many accolades as an author, including the National Book Award in 2012 for her last novel, “The Round House.”By The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead , April 30, 2013

Put part of oil-tax fund into stocks like Alaska does
A billion here, a billion there. And pretty soon, you’re talking about the Alaska Permanent Fund, which reached a new high of about $45 billion at the end of March. Recalibrate Missouri River purpose
Agreed, the strategy behind management of the Missouri River, set by Congress in 1944, needs to be reshaped. But it needs to be done in a balanced and thoughtful way. Four members of the Missouri congressional delegation want to eliminate “fish and wildlife” from the eight purposes laid out to guide the federal government’s management of the river. That kind of unilateral action runs the risk of creating more problems than it solves, and would not fix much of what’s wrong with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers management of the river.By Bismarck Tribune , April 19, 2013
