Commission declares an emergency

The Stutsman County Commission issued an emergency declaration during a special meeting Thursday. The declaration cites heavy rain in the northern portion of the county occurring after the end of the previous presidential disaster declaration on July 20. Jerry Bergquist, Stutsman County emergency manager, said the county estimated more than $277,000 in damage to township roads in a three-township area in the northeast corner of the county.

Tornado sirens will be sounding in Jamestown today

Tornado sirens are expected to be sounded today as part of statewide exercise, according to Stutsman County Emergency Manager Jerry Bergquist. Bergquist said in a press release that sirens in area communities are to be sounded between 11:10 and 11:20 a.m. today with a “mock” tornado warning being issued by the National Weather Service for the annual exercise.

Stutsman County Emergency Management has launched a new blog to help area residents prepare for emergencies. The blog will also be used to provide information during emergencies. The blog is titled “Stutsman Emergency Management: Are You Prepared?” and can be found at the website areyouprepared.areavoices.com. The blog is also being featured on The Jamestown Sun’s website, www.jamestownsun.com. Featured blogs are found in the website’s center column under the words “Area Voices.”

Free CERT training available in October

The Stutsman County Local Emergency Planning Committee, in conjunction with the North Dakota League of Cities, is sponsoring a citizen-based emergency response program called Community Emergency Response Teams or CERT. CERT training is free and is open to all citizens 18 years or older.

Code Red to add tornado warnings

FARGO (AP) — An emergency notification system used heavily during the 2009 spring flood in the Fargo-Moorhead area is expanded to include other weather disasters. Residents of North Dakota’s Cass County and Minnesota’s Clay County who sign up for the “Code Reds” will be alerted by a prerecorded phone message if there’s a tornado. They also will have the option of receiving severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings.

The Jamestown Regional Airport will be conducting a full-scale emergency exercise at the Jamestown Airport at 6:30 p.m. Monday. This exercise will test the airport’s emergency plan as well as those agencies that would respond in the event of an actual aviation incident or accident.

When Don Magdzas’ heart stopped, his neighbors kept his blood pumping. When his breath failed, they gave him theirs. In September, three Foxboro residents — Sara Larsen, Rick Stromberg and Summit Volunteer Firefighter Willy Silvernale — will be honored for saving the life of Magdzas, a Wisconsin State Trooper who supervisor Sgt. W. Brett Heino calls “one of our best.”
