Some Jamestown residents evacuate homes voluntarily At 1 p.m. on Sunday, three residents from 17th Avenue Southwest met with city officials at City Hall at the request of Jamestown Police Chief Dave Donegan. They were there to be asked to leave their homes. The residents were given formal letters that said voluntary evacuation of their homes was strongly advised, said Gary Harr, an evacuee, whose home is on 17th Avenue Southwest on the Pipestem Creek.

With her city fighting a record flood, Valley City’s mayor asked people to evacuate by Wednesday if they are elderly, disabled or live in low-lying areas, so crews can focus on holding off the Sheyenne River. Valley City Mayor Mary Lee Nielson said the evacuation is voluntary, but “strongly recommended.” She said it would affect about 1,450 homes, or not quite half the city of nearly 7,000 people.

LaMoure County officials ordered a voluntary evacuation today after the James River water levels rose throughout the county, according to Sheri Gartner, LaMoure County director of emergency services. Residents in the Adrian area reported the water is higher than the 20.34 feet crest the town saw in late March. Water levels continue to rise, Gartner said.

N.D. Veterans Home evacuated

Officials at the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon have begun evacuating residents as a precaution due to the ever-rising Sheyenne River. Thirty-eight residents from the home’s skilled nursing unit were being taken by staff, ambulance or bus to a Wahpeton nursing home on Saturday. The rest of the 120 patients, who re-quire only basic care, were to remain until Tuesday, when they will go with family members or be taken to a care facility in Valley City.

Fargo resisted FEMA’s recommendation to evacuate With floodwaters rising around them, Fargo officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency faced an agonizing decision: Should they order a mandatory evacuation of the entire city? FEMA thought the best course of action was to evacuate and not leave anything to chance. Fargo officials disagreed, saying they knew what it would take to hold back the Red River. The conversation turned heated at times, and Fargo ultimately won.
