Stocks fall after more bad news
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks extended their slide for a third day Thursday as more disappointing earnings and economic news flowed in. The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 60 points after the Labor Department reported that the number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time rose last week to 484,000. The gain was small at 2,000, but economists had expected the number to drop. The news pointed to continuing weakness in the labor market, yet another sign that the economic recovery is weakening.August 13, 2010

UND signs exchange program
The University of North Dakota and Chung Yuan Christian University in Jhongli City, Taiwan, have signed a long-term agreement for student and faculty exchanges, UND officials said Thursday. Investors are getting enthusiastic about stocks again after some reassuring news from the job market. Stocks rose for a third straight day Thursday on the Labor Department’s report of a larger than expected drop in the number of newly laid-off people seeking unemployment benefits. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 121 points after climbing 275 Wednesday and advancing modestly Tuesday. Police identify woman fatally shot during handgun exchange
Police say a 29-year-old woman was fatally shot during an exchange of a handgun at a mobile home in Fergus Falls. Authorities identified the victim Monday as Amanda Kemmer of Fergus Falls. Police said they were called to the Lakeview Estates Mobile Home Park Friday about 10:30 p.m. They found Kemmer dead of a gunshot wound to the chest.March 02, 2010
