If one tries hard enough and is clever enough, one can find a federal judge to rule on just about anything. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a group of atheists and agnostics based in Madison, Wis., filed a lawsuit asking Judge Barbara Crabb to order the government to cease from its annual National Day of Prayer proclamation. Last week, Judge Crabb ruled in the group’s favor. Congress established the day of prayer in 1952 and reaffirmed it in 1988. Minn. to get new federal wolf money
A new federal government program will help deal with problem wolves without killing them and pay farmers more for livestock losses from wolf attacks. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced $1 million in grants Thursday. Wisconsin will get $140,000 for the program, Minnesota $100,000 and Michigan $90,000. North Dakota was among a group of 10 states that didn’t take part in competition for $4.35 billion in federal education grant money. North Dakota school superintendent Wayne Sanstead said applying for “Race to the Top” money would have cost more than $250,000 just to prepare the paperwork. Electric co-ops in line for federal loan money
Three North Dakota rural electric cooperatives are among 29 nationwide getting federal loans and loan guarantees for upgrades. S.D. governor: State can’t rely on federal money
South Dakota cannot rely on getting additional federal stimulus money to help balance next year’s budget, Gov. Mike Rounds said Thursday. Rounds said he and the governors of more than 40 other states have asked Congress to extend higher federal Medicaid payments for another six months, which would give South Dakota an extra $26 million in federal funds to replace state money next year.
