Rain, rain stay away

Rainy days and Mondays always got American singer/songwriter Karen Carpenter down, but lately it’s been crying skies on Saturdays that’s given local dirt track officials a reason to sing the blues. Alas, Jamestown Speedway will attempt to host its annual Fireworks Spectacular this Saturday night, after rain has affected the outcome of six of the speedway’s first eight shows of the season.

Fireworks cause two grass fires here

The Jamestown Fire Department was called out twice Tuesday to put out grass fires caused by fireworks. At 12:15 p.m., the fire department responded to the 1300 block of Sixth Avenue Northwest. Firefighters spent about 20 minutes putting out a small grass fire on a slope. Deputy Fire Chief Jerry Kainz said the department uses “a mini-pumper so we can get off road” for grass fires where no hydrant is available.

Other views: Political fireworks are coming

We’re surprised it took this long, frankly, but a group of fireworks stand owners wants to change a year-old state law banning the sale of bottle rockets. A group led by Lu Ann Moore of Barney is working to get a measure on the November ballot that would allow sales of bottle rockets to people over the age of 17. The Legislature approved a law last year that outlaws the sale of bottle rockets, but does not make it illegal to possess them or shoot them off. If the petition’s language is approved, those behind the measure would need to gather 12,844 signatures and submit them to the Secretary of State’s Office by Aug. 4 to get the measure on the November ballot.

Millions of viewers nationwide, thousands right here in South Dakota, have enjoyed the July 3 Mount Rushmore fireworks. This year, don’t make any plans. Thanks to damage inflicted by the mountain pine beetle, the National Park Service canceled the Independence Day fireworks display last week. Concerns over the heightened fire danger surrounding the monument prompted the move.

Fireworks causes fires over weekend

The Jamestown Fire Department spent a busy Fourth of July putting out fires started by fireworks. No injuries were reported and no serious damage occurred, said Deputy Fire Chief Gordie Christianson. The department was called out three times Saturday. The first call came in at just after noon to a grass fire started by fireworks at 905 12th Ave. S.E.
