NHL all star game" Ovechkin, East win in shootout

The NHL All-Star game was settled in the newest of ways in hockey’s oldest city. Alex Ovechkin sealed the Eastern Conference’s 12-11 victory Sunday night with a goal in the third round of the shootout. It capped off the busiest of nights for the NHL’s reigning MVP, who also had a goal and two assists.

Myhre named Wildlife Officer of the Year

James Myhre, North Dakota Game and Fish Department district game warden stationed in Dawson, is the state’s 2008 Wildlife Officer of the Year. Myhre was honored recently by the Shikar-Safari Club International, a private conservation organization that annually recognizes outstanding wildlife officers in each state.

Creel surveys being conducted for anglers fishing Odland Dam, Alkaline Lake

Anglers fishing Odland Dam and Alkaline Lake this winter are asked to participate in creel surveys designed to help managers assess the status of these fisheries. Interviews take only a few minutes and information is kept confidential, said the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. A creel survey at Odland Dam in Golden Valley County continues through March 2009, and one at Alkaline Lake in Kidder County runs through April 2009.

The state Game and Fish Department invites all North Dakota schools participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program to register for the first annual state tournament. Jeff Long, NASP coordinator, said the 2009 tournament will be held in February in a local school.

Jamestown man creates games based on hunting

Jamestown resident Paul Lunde combined a childhood habit of inventing games with a passion for hunting and came up with the Hunting Fever series of board games. As a child, whenever he and his brother, Brian, couldn’t be outside, Lunde said they’d invent games to play inside. But that was decades ago and throughout his adulthood Lunde didn’t even consider creating a board game, much less three. In fact, he said, the idea didn’t really occur to him until about two years ago, when he and his wife, Kim, were helping a friend’s boy learn to read. The boy loved hunting, so they made him a hunting-themed word association game.

Rain suspends Game 5 of Series

Game 5 of the World Series was suspended because of rain in the sixth inning Monday night with the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays tied at 2 and the field already a sloppy, soggy mess. “I can’t tell you tonight when we’ll resume,” commissioner Bud Selig said. “We’ll stay here if we have to celebrate Thanksgiving here.”

The carefree years of youth

It took a few years for me to realize that those early autumn days hunting sharp-tailed grouse with my father and uncles in the 1960s were something special. And now, after more than four decades, I realize not only were they special; they were some of the very best days of my life. It is difficult for me to convey the indescribable excitement those weekends held for me. I’d load my vest with appropriate shells, usually No. 6s in 1-1/8 oz. 16 gauge. (These were the years when paper shells were becoming extinct, and one could only buy the new plastic shells.) I only had one shotgun in those days — a Remington Model 870 Wingmaster.
