Anglers fishing Odland Dam and Alkaline Lake this winter are asked to participate in creel surveys designed to help managers assess the status of these fisheries. Interviews take only a few minutes and information is kept confidential, said the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. It took a few years for me to realize that those early autumn days hunting sharp-tailed grouse with my father and uncles in the 1960s were something special. And now, after more than four decades, I realize not only were they special; they were some of the very best days of my life. It is difficult for me to convey the indescribable excitement those weekends held for me. I’d load my vest with appropriate shells, usually No. 6s in 1-1/8 oz. 16 gauge. (These were the years when paper shells were becoming extinct, and one could only buy the new plastic shells.) I only had one shotgun in those days — a Remington Model 870 Wingmaster.October 03, 2008
