A man wearing a red ski mask and toting a handgun robbed the front desk of the Fairfield Inn in Grand Forks Thursday shortly after 5 p.m., according to police.
Detectives are investigating the crime scene now and patrol officers are searching the surrounding area for the suspect who was last seen heading north.

A Jan. 17 concert at the Fargodome by the Australian rock band AC/DC has prompted a run on hotel space.
Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitors Bureau President Cole Carley said hotel beds for the coming weekend were snapped up early because of the concert, plus a pair of conventions and some smaller events.
Consider how a city looks to a terrorist seeking targets.
There’s the airport — inviting, but heavily secured. There’s the U.S. Embassy, perimeter guarded by crack local forces and Marines. And there’s the plush international hotel, open to anyone with a decent outfit and money for a cup of coffee.

How about a “Bravo” for Ernie Hubacker for his recent suggestion in The Sun that the Jamestown Hospital building be saved and it be developed into some sort of hotel?
Jamestown has been turned down in recent years as a site for some statewide events. This has meant loss of income for businesses, the community and city sales tax collections.
A hotel is planned on University of North Dakota land near the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Officials of UND and Sioux Falls, S.D.,-based developer Hegg Companies Inc., say they hope to finalize an agreement for a Courtyard by Marriott hotel by the end of July.
