Bill would limit costs to N.D. county jails for inmate health care

County jails across North Dakota could benefit this Legislative session with the passage of two proposed bills that would help cover medical expenses for inmates currently paid by the jails. Senate Bill 2024 would make inmates financially responsible for the costs of medical or health care and correctional facilities could seek reimbursement for the total amount of incurred medical costs.

Christmas service planned at LEC jail

This Christmas Eve, as on every Christmas Eve for the past eight years, the Christmas message will be heard and hymns of the season sung at the Stutsman County Law Enforcement Center jail. The program is led by two volunteers, Larry and Robin Phillips, who have made it their own way of marking the season.

Les Witkowski says the incident happened Aug. 1 when the 42-year-old man booked on an aggravated assault charge became upset at not being able to speak to a chaplain.

County jails try to resolve expansion issues

The last time Burleigh and Morton counties talked about expanding jails, it took almost 20 years to get anything done. This time around, discussions have been ongoing for at least five years. In the early 1980s, both counties were exploring ways to get their jails up to new state codes and to expand for more inmates. Talks for a regional facility broke down, and the counties ended up going their own ways to remedy the problems. Morton County built a new jail, finished in 1986, that currently holds 35 inmates. Burleigh County renovated and expanded its downtown jail in 1992, then finished a fourth floor in 1999. That facility holds 138 inmates.
