Dewald speaks at Kiwanis meeting
Beth Dewald, executive director of the Buffalo Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, was the guest speaker at the April 5 Kiwanis meeting on the topic of “Business Disaster Readiness.” Dewald challenged members with the question “how prepared are we with continuation plans for disaster situations, both at home and at our businesses?” She explained how important that continuation plan is along with ensuring that our employees are well trained on business continuation. Dewald stressed that every business and home should have a disaster supply kit and what items should be included in that kit.April 13, 2010

Kenrad Pederson introduced Dr. Kenneth McDougall to speak at the March 29 Kiwanis noon luncheon meeting in the Lantern Room. He told about experiences as a volunteer for the American Dental Association. Six Kiwanis members attended a roundtable meeting at The Depot March 15 instead of the regular Kiwanis meeting. Fifteen Kiwanis members attended the Chamber’s Ag Week Noon Luncheon at the Gladstone Inn & Suites March 17. Kiwanis was recognized as having the largest representation of members in attendance of all the Jamestown service clubs.March 23, 2010
Frey speaks at Kiwanis
Jan Barnes introduced Anita Frey, parent educator/coordinator of the Even Start Family Literacy Program, who spoke at the March 8 Kiwanis noon luncheon meeting at the Lantern Room. Frey, who is in her third year here, said Even Start is an educational program for low-income families that is designed to improve the academic achievement of young children along with their parents. Goals are to help parents improve their literacy skills, to help parents become full partners in educating their children, and to help children reach their full potential as learners by the time they start kindergarten. Many parents get their GED and some go on to college.March 16, 2010

Kenrad Pederson of the Jamestown Kiwanis Club was the presenter at the Feb. 22 Kiwanis meeting. His program was on membership and the benefits of increasing the membership of the local club. Bergquist speaks at Kiwanis meeting
Bob Welsh introduced Jerry Bergquist, Stutsman County emergency manager, to speak at the Feb. 8 noon Kiwanis meeting in the Lantern Room. Bergquist said all records were broken last year in the elevation of water at both the Pipestem and Jamestown dams. The water from the dams ran at 3,200 cubic feet per second for four months for a total of 600,000-acre feet of water. In 1997 the water was at 1,800 cubic feet per second.February 17, 2010

Huebler speaks on Germany at Kiwanis
The guest speaker at the Jan. 4 Kiwanis meeting was Maria Huebler, foreign exchange intern with Youth For Christ. Huebler is from Germany. She shared information on the area of Germany that is her home as well as the differences she is seeing between Germany and the U.S. She said was looking for a way to serve Christ after graduating from high school and applied with Youth For Christ. Youth For Christ in Jamestown was interested in an intern and chose Huebler based on information on her application. She shared some of the programs she is involved with at Youth For Christ along with her desire to make a difference in the lives of youth. Huebler will be in Jamestown through February. Then she will return to Germany and intends to assist with building a church in Berlin.January 12, 2010
Even Start receives $200 donation
Jamestown’s Kiwanis Club recently donated $200 to Even Start for books and board games for the children and their families. “We’re extremely pleased to be able to help with this literacy program where parents and children learn together.” said Jan Barnes, chair of the Young Children: Priority One Committee. “It totally fits in with the Kiwanis mission to helping children.”January 06, 2010
Kunzman speaks on ACC at Kiwanis
Pam Kunzman introduced Dan Kunzman who showed slides and spoke about the services provided by the Anne Carlsen Center at the Dec. 28 noon Kiwanis meeting in the Lantern Room. Kunzman is the executive director of the Anne Carlsen Center Foundation and has been here about 1 1/2 years. He said the ACC employs 364 people and about 290 of them are full time. Many people are surprised that the ACC has a K-12 school that is fully accredited the same as other schools in North Dakota. It is also a hospital with 54 beds and about half of the residents are medically fragile.January 05, 2010
