States with high levels of poverty and unemployment have been struggling with growing Medicaid budgets during the recession, and some governors worry their financial burdens could get worse as Congress works on a comprehensive health care bill.

The Justice Department on Monday accused Wyeth, one of the nation’s biggest drugmakers, of cheating Medicaid programs out of hundreds of millions of dollars by overcharging for a stomach acid drug.
The Justice Department and more than a dozen states have joined in two whistleblower lawsuits against the Madison, N.J.-based drug company filed in federal court in Massachusetts.
Lawmakers voted last year to pay North Dakota dentists more for serving people on the low-income Medicaid health care system.
Their hope was that more dentists would agree to take Medicaid patients and then more people would get care. The rates for dentists went up July 1, 2007.
