Red River Valley, Devils Lake look at odds of 2011 flooding

There’s a greater than 50 percent chance of the Red River exceeding major flood stage at Grand Forks, Fargo and several other cities in the valley for the third year in a row, the National Weather Service announced. But warning coordination meteorologist Greg Gust said the 2011 spring flood outlook released Thursday also contains “pretty sobering numbers” for the Devils Lake Basin, including a 50 percent chance the lake will break its record level by about 2.5 feet.

Diversion deadline set: Jan. 31 is deadline for F-M area officials to argue diversion alignment

FARGO — Local leaders have until Jan. 31 to argue their case for a proposed diversion alignment about 1.5 miles farther west than the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ preferred route. Sanford hiring for new medical records system

Sanford Health is in the midst of hiring 130 new employees to carry out a new electronic medical records system that will inject $35 million into the Fargo-Moorhead area. The initiative will be phased in over several years and the jobs, including salaries and benefits, will range from the mid-$40,000s to $80,000 a year, Craig Hewitt, Sanford’s chief technology officer, said Wednesday.

Diversion signing has protesters

FARGO — Mayors from Fargo and Moorhead, Minn., signed a sponsorship agreement Thursday for the construction of a Red River diversion and promised residents who live downstream that their towns will be protected in other ways. More than 50 people who live mostly in rural areas protested the event at Fargo’s city hall with posters that read, “Don’t Sell Us Down The River” and “Protect Us Too.” They’re worried about the project increasing water levels in communities north of the north-flowing river.
