Earlier this month, the state of North Dakota received another extension from the federal government, putting off for another year compliance with a 2006 law setting national standards for sex offender registration.
It’s the last extension allowed by the feds and, the thing is, the state may never comply with the law the way it’s written.

The Judicial Process Committee of the North Dakota Legislature met at the North Dakota State Hospital Wednesday to take reports and discuss pending legislation planned for the upcoming legislative session.
Alex Schweitzer, administrator of the State Hospital, clarified his statement made at the Monday governing board concerning the releases by judges of individuals from the sex offender treatment unit quoted in a story in Tuesday’s Sun titled “Secure Services releases seven in 2009.”
