At times during training camp, neither Tarvaris Jackson nor Sage Rosenfels looked ready for the job: Passes sailed past receivers, some of them right to the defense’s hands. That’s why it’s called practice, though, and why Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress isn’t in a rush to choose his starting quarterback. Rosenfels shined in the first preseason game, completing 10 of his 13 throws without a turnover and leading the Vikings to 10 points during the two series he played.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Coach Tim Brewster won’t add any mystery: Adam Weber is Minnesota’s quarterback. Weber has managed to start all 25 games of his career for the Gophers, and after only two years he’s already fourth on the school’s all-time list for passing yardage. Prized recruit MarQueis Gray has joined the team, but Brewster said Friday that Weber’s job is safe while the Gophers find other ways to incorporate Gray’s athleticism into the offense.

Jackson misses practice with knee injury

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson did not practice on Sunday while rehabbing a sprained MCL in his left knee. Jackson stayed inside while his teammates practiced in the afternoon and wore a brace on the knee when he emerged from the locker room. He declined to comment. Jackson was injured on Saturday when defensive lineman LeTroy Guion accidentally rolled up on his leg during an 11-on-11 drill.

Brett Favre’s decision to remain retired rocked the Minnesota Vikings and returned the competition to Jackson and Sage Rosenfels, but when his buddies checked in with him after hearing the news earlier this week Jackson surprised them with his lack of excitement.

Vick reinstated

Michael Vick is back in the NFL. Now all he needs is a team to play for. Vick, free after serving 18 months in prison for running a dogfighting ring, was reinstated with conditions by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday. He could participate in regular-season games as early as October. Vick can immediately take part in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and can play in the final two preseason games — if he can find a team that will sign him. A number of teams have already said they would not.

Chiefs lock up Cassel

Chiefs lock up Cassel Kansas City has not officially named Matt Cassel its starting quarterback, but there can be no doubt now. After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
