Losing our independence
As more Americans, especially the unemployed, come to rely on government to take care of them, we risk losing our independence. The Washington Times reports American reliance on government is at an all-time high. This is not our Founders’ America. We seem to have declined from a “can-do” spirit, to “can’t do” — at least without government — and soon, unless we change our ways, “won’t do.”By Cal Thomas, Tribune Media Services , March 05, 2010

Recession over but jobs remain a concern
Now that the Great Recession appears over, the economy looks to be entering a rocky recovery, in which much of the nation will continue to struggle well into 2010. The Associated Press’ monthly analysis of economic stress in more than 3,100 U.S. counties found the economy little changed in October compared with September. Some states saw slight improvement or stabilization, thanks to steadying foreclosure and bankruptcy rates. But the gains may be brief. Unemployment remains high, and the housing market is still weak.By By Mike Schneider and Martin Crutsinger, The Associated Press , December 08, 2009

Other views: Recession is easing in U.S.
It’s certainly too early to celebrate an end to the national recession, but credible analysts are reading new numbers and suggesting the beginning of the end is under way. The latest encouraging sign was last week’s July unemployment report, which was surprising in that it was not as bad as expected. That is, fewer jobs were lost than economy-watchers predicted. If the trend continues in August, it will suggest the economic free fall has bottomed out because the jobless rate always lags behind other indicators of recovery.By The Forum , August 17, 2009
