Thompson speaks at Rotary

Pebbles Thompson, director of Project Night-Light, a program which gives hope to abused children in the form of a backpack filled with special things, spoke at the Rotary meeting. Thompson is a credentialed minister through the Assemblies of God and previously served the Fargo area as a youth pastor. She and her husband have four children. She grew up in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School.

Rotary essay winners announced

Rotary has announced the winners of its 4-Way Essay Contest. The first-place essay winner is Nikki Iverson. Second place went to Melanie Etter. The third-place winner is Latasha Klatt. Iverson’s winning essay has been forwarded to the regional contest to compete against other district winners.

Carlson shares at Rotary Club

Sue Carlson shared her experience at the recent International Climate Change Conference held in Copenhagen, Denmark, during the last Rotary meeting. Carlson is a past president of the Wisconsin Farmers Union and has a vast knowledge of farming. Her husband, Robert, is president of the North Dakota Farmers Union.

Rotary Club donates relief kits to Haiti

Rotary Club donates relief kits to Haiti The Jamestown Rotary Club is part of an international Rotarian effort to provide Haiti relief comprehensive enough for a family of 10 but small enough to fit in a multipurpose 49-gallon container. It’s called a ShelterBox and it contains a tent that sleeps up to 10, blankets, a water purification kit, collapsible water containers, sleeping mats, tools, rope, a stove, cooking supplies and even tools to help kids cope, said Tom Eckstein, a local Rotarian involved in the project.

More than Words performs at Rotary

More than Words, a group made up of seven students from Jamestown High School, under the direction of Cheryl McIntyre, performed at the Rotary Valentine meeting. Members of the group are Katie Kunzman, Sarah Muhs, Jamie Kessler, Laura Kraft, Jace Erickson, Nick Bercier and Alex Nelson.

Rotary sets Essay Contest

An area high school student will be awarded the $1,000 top prize in the Annual Rotary District 5580 Essay Contest. Six $100 regional winners will also be selected. Rotary District 5580 offers the contest as an incentive to young people to develop their skills of self-expression and as evidence of a sincere interest in the ideals of the youth. All students in their final two years of high school are eligible to participate.

Balcom speaks on produce at Rotary

Sue B. Balcom, local foods marketing specialist for the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, was guest speaker at the Feb. 2 Rotary meeting. She was introduced by Dan Buchanan. Balcom’s job entails encouraging people to have vegetable gardens and grow produce locally.

The Jan. 5 Rotary meeting was presided over by President Tom Boerger. Darrell Losing gave the invocation and Gary Riffe and Bev Kennison led the group in music. Harold Bensch collected “Happy Dollars” for Rotary projects. Student guests at the meeting were Marta Fitzer and Melissa McMillan.

Rotarians learn of polio history

A special documentary DVD on the eradication of polio was shown to Rotary members at their Dec. 15 meeting. This is a project Rotarians have taken on worldwide, and for the past 15 years Rotary International has had a special program through the Paul Harris Foundation to raise money to help with this dreaded disease. The DVD told the story of the difficulty getting children inoculated for polio in just the country of India.

The Dec. 8 Rotary meeting was held at the Buffalo City Grille and presided over by President Tom Boerger. Warren Tobin gave the invocation, Larry Hoffman accompanied by Bev Kennison led the group in Christmas music, and Rick Pfeiffer collected numerous “Happy Dollars” for Rotary projects. Guests at the meeting again were National Honor Society students Alex Redman, Alex Reed and Jennifer Neva.
