Letter to the editor: Businesses came through for sandbaggers again

I volunteer for Buffalo Valley Red Cross as a mass care feeding at our two sandbagging sites (Wilson and Jamestown High School). I called on Barb Alber at Walmart for bread, meat and cheese for 200 sandwiches. She came through by donating it all to make the sandwiches. She also donated 1,296 bottles of water. Thank you Walmart for being there for us again this year to help feed our sandbaggers. All of us at the Red Cross say thank you very much. Also, thank you to Frito Lay for chips. Thank you all.

Diking pause: Corps stops diking work after finding less moisture Construction on dikes in Jamestown was halted Monday afternoon, according to Paul Johnston, chief public affairs officer for the Army Corps of Engineers. The move came after officials found the water equivalent of snowpack upstream of the Jamestown and Pipestem dams to be less than in earlier forecasts.

Corps stepping up water releases

Corps stepping up water releases Plans for initiating releases out of Jamestown and Pipestem reservoirs in North Dakota were announced Saturday in a news release by the Army Corps of Engineers. Due to abnormally high snow pack conditions in the basins upstream of the reservoirs, the corps expects high inflows into the two reservoirs this spring. Current snow pack conditions are similar to the record runoff year in 2009, the corps said. Releases from the reservoirs have been held at low levels in order to minimize downstream damages during the recent spring runoff.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Before this flood season, officials in Fargo asked homeowners to clear paths in their yards so that firm and straight walls of sandbags could be placed to protect their homes. One resident cut down his tree. Another went so far to use a torch to melt the ice off his ground.

Sirens to sound call for help in Clara City

Sirens will be sounded in Clara City if volunteers are needed for emergency sandbagging, fire fighters in the community decided on Monday. The firefighters are preparing for the possibility of additional flooding after they were joined by other volunteers in battling the rising waters of Hawk Creek on Sunday.

Red River volunteers in flood-fighting mode

Red River volunteers in flood-fighting mode Residents racing to protect homes near the fast-rising Red River got a reprieve when the National Weather Service pushed back its forecast for the crest from Saturday to Sunday. The new projection shows the river cresting at 20 feet over flood stage in Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., on Sunday morning. Snowmelt that has yet to enter the system and a new forecast for a second crest upstream led to the change, weather service spokesman Bill Barrett said Tuesday.

Kindred students aid Oxbow

About 60 Kindred, N.D., senior high school students helped Monday afternoon with flood-fighting efforts in Oxbow, about eight miles south of Fargo. Contractors were putting up clay dikes along the Red River on Monday, as volunteers filled sandbags that should be placed along the river early this week, said Oxbow Mayor Jim Nyhof.

Area shifts into flood-fight mode Fargo-Moorhead leaders are counting on a wall of volunteers to hold back the rising Red River for the second time in less than a year. The call went out on both sides of the river Monday for extra help to fill sandbags and build levees in the region’s flood-prone areas. Like last year, area students are being counted on to help get the job done.
