Senate BISMARCK — The North Dakota House defeated a bill that would have banned smoking in vehicles if children younger than 13 were present. The bill died on a 28-66 vote. The bill stems from a group of Williston students who told lawmakers about the harmful effects of smoking and spoke of their personal health problems from secondhand smoke.

The best way to quit smoking is with a little help, according to Nancy Thoen, director of tobacco prevention and control at the Central Valley Health District. “Get support from your family,” she said. “Let everyone around you know you’re quitting so it’s easier for them to be supportive.” Along with family support some help from professionals is available as well.
