Survey shows optimism on economy

Middle America’s business sector appears optimistic about the region’s economy over next six months, despite signs that suggest the economy will see a weak recovery in 2010, according to a survey of business leaders and supply managers in nine Midwest and Plains states released Monday. The Business Conditions Index for the Mid-America region rose to 50.3 in December, compared with 47.5 in November.

Survey crews working on viaduct

Survey crews will be working Thursday in the viaduct area of Fourth Avenue. From approximately 10 a.m. to noon, the crews will be surveying the sanitary and storm sewer at this location. The roadway will be temporarily narrowed to one lane and traffic will be controlled with flaggers while this work is being completed.

Survey finds slower decline of honeybee colonies

The decline of honeybee colonies has slowed slightly since last fall, but a mysterious combination of ailments is still decimating the insect’s population, federal researchers say. U.S. Department of Agriculture researchers found that honeybee colonies declined by 29 percent between September 2008 and early April. That’s an improvement over the last two years, when researchers found that 32 percent and 36 percent of all beekeepers surveyed lost hives.

Jamestown Sun subscribers will find the City Council-sponsored community survey in today’s newspaper. The packet includes a cover letter, survey and addressed return envelope. Once it’s filled out, the survey can be mailed or dropped off at City Hall in the water bill drop box.
