Synod volunteers: Group decides to work in community where ELCA meeting is held
Jamestown resident Art Perleberg swept leaves, dust and debris from an altar Saturday — an offering meant to spread the Gospel by actions rather than words, church leaders said.
The Eastern North Dakota Synod Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America met over the weekend for worship, church business and service. More than 400 voting members from 230 churches in cities like Grand Forks, Fargo and Valley City attended.

Red River volunteers in flood-fighting mode
Residents racing to protect homes near the fast-rising Red River got a reprieve when the National Weather Service pushed back its forecast for the crest from Saturday to Sunday.
The new projection shows the river cresting at 20 feet over flood stage in Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., on Sunday morning. Snowmelt that has yet to enter the system and a new forecast for a second crest upstream led to the change, weather service spokesman Bill Barrett said Tuesday.

Fargo: Early sandbag work lacks volunteers
A lack of urgency has translated into a lack of volunteers early on in Fargo’s attempt to make 1 million sandbags for this spring’s flood fight.
By 3 p.m. Monday, about 100 volunteers had made 20,000 sandbags at the city’s garbage utility building, dubbed “Sandbag Central.”
They were joined by about 20 Cass County Jail inmates and a handful of firefighters running two of three available automated sandbag-making machines.

Ypsilanti seeks volunteers to help with park cleanup
YPSILANTI, N.D. — Kate E. Glaspell Park in this town is in need of volunteers to help with clean up and repairs this weekend, residents said.
Ypsilanti, a town of about 150 people located about 15 miles south of Jamestown, suffered damage from the March and April flood waters.
The water washed out the road, parking lot and part of the banks of the town’s only park, where residents and travelers typically meet for camping and fishing as well as weddings, reunions and social gatherings.
