A North Dakota curler has been named captain for the U.S. team at the New Zealand Winter Games. Twenty-one-year-old Jerod Roland of Petersburg was leaving Monday for the competition that will include teams from eight countries.

Alumni beats JHS

The Jamestown alumni soccer team defeated the Jamestown High School boys’ soccer team 7-0 on Saturday. Caleb Sorenson scored twice as six different players scored in all. Also scoring were Ryan Kleinknecht, Ross Perleberg, Todd Brossart, Jay Anderson and Ben Lee.

Bolt shatters world record in 100 meters

Usain Bolt saved the celebration for after the finish line this time and showed that, yes, he can keep breaking that world record. He obliterated it, in fact. Bolt ran 100 meters in 9.58 seconds Sunday at world championships, turning his showdown against Tyson Gay into a rout and putting to rest the questions that went unanswered last time he set the record — at his showboating Olympic run of 9.69 seconds.

Schultz’s place second in Colorado

Joe Schultz and his daughter Kylie Schultz of Eckelson wrestled in the 2009 Games of America in Fort Carson, Colo. Kylie Schulz, 12, finished second in the girls’ 12 & under 90-pound division. Joe Schulz, 36, finished second in the Masters (30-plus) division at 182 pounds.

Aesoph gets second in Aberdeen off-road

Steve Aesoph of Jamestown finished second overall in the 10K run at the Subway Off-Road Festival in Aberdeen, S.D., on Saturday. Aesoph finished in 38:56. He also finished fourth in his age group in the mountain bike expert class.

Alexandra beats the boys again

What a gal! Rachel Alexandra sped around the far turn and rolled past the boys once again to win the $1.25 million Haskell Invitational, establishing herself as one of the greatest fillies in thoroughbred racing. When the regal bay filly returned to the winner’s circle with Calvin Borel patting her neck, the Monmouth Park crowd of 37,090 cheered mightily for racing’s brightest star.

Phelps notches fifth gold medal

Michael Phelps had every reason to be satisfied after the Beijing Olympics. Yet he kept insisting there was more to do in the pool. Clearly. Even coming off his longest layoff and the embarrassment of being photographed inhaling from a marijuana pipe, Phelps turned in another remarkable performance over eight days at the Foro Italico. He completed it Sunday night by helping the U.S. 400-meter medley relay team set the 43rd world record of the fastest meet in history.

Aesoph wins Pipestem triathlon

Steven Aesoph of Jamestown won the Pipestem Off-Road Triathlon held on Saturday. He finished the event, which consisted of a 1,000-meter swim, an eight-mile mountain bike ride and a five-mile trail run, in 1:45:58.

Roesler ready to represent U.S.

Laura Roesler was out of town when the box with her Team USA gear arrived at her south Fargo home. Her sister, Emily, got the first peek at the apparel. Laura couldn’t wait to see the contents. “I was like, ‘OK, just take everything out,’ ” said Laura Roesler, who was in Minneapolis at the time.

Phelps gets back on track

Michael Phelps had another swimsuit issue. It didn’t slow him down this time. Phelps bounced back from a stunning loss with something more familiar — a world record in the 200-meter butterfly Wednesday. Contador rips Armstrong

MADRID (AP) — Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong are sniping again after a fragile truce during the Tour de France. Contador, who secured his second Tour win on Sunday in Paris, said he had no admiration for the American as a person and tensions between the two had a negative effect on the Astana team. Armstrong, the seven-time champion who finished third in his first Tour since 2005, responded that Contador should “drop this drivel.”
