Research Center looks for workers

While a number of industries are struggling in the current economy, the Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota is looking for workers. Director Gerald Groenewald said the EERC has 25 open jobs and more are expected.

Board: Time for Sioux logo to go

Thursday’s action by the State Board of Higher Education concerning the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo probably seals their fate, UND President Robert Kelley said. “I think it does,” he said shortly after board members voted 8-0 to set a new deadline of Oct. 1 for the university to gain tribal approval for use of the name and requiring that such approval be encased in a 30-year binding agreement.

Tribal voters approve Fighting Sioux nickname

Members of the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe say they’re proud of the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname and they showed it with their votes. State officials say the tribal vote is just one of the factors they must consider. Results from the tribe’s primary election, announced Wednesday by the tribal election committee, showed 764 votes in favor of UND’s nickname and Indian head logo and 371 against it.

Spirit Lake tribal members vote on nickname

Members of the Spirit Lake tribe are voting on the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname. The nickname and logo issue is among the items on the Spirit Lake tribal primary ballot. Reservation polls close at 7 p.m.

North Dakota AD wants nickname resolved

The University of North Dakota’s athletic director says the dispute over the school’s Fighting Sioux nickname and logo has affected a number of programs, including football. Athletic director Brian Faison said the Sioux might have been able to get the Minnesota Gophers on their football schedule if the issue had been resolved.

UND AgCam to become operational

A sophisticated camera built at the University of North Dakota and blasted into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavor is set to start working. UND said the AgCam is to become operational Tuesday. It was taken to the International Space Station last November. The camera is to send back high-resolution pictures and information about the Earth that can be used by farmers and scientists.

Spirit Lake tribe sets nickname vote

The Spirit Lake tribe has scheduled an April vote on the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. Susie Fox, an assistant to the tribal secretary, said Thursday the nickname will be on the tribal primary election ballot April 21. She said the ballot language has not yet been set.

Former UND president dies at 87

GRAND FORKS — Thomas Clifford, who came to the University of North Dakota as a student and went on to be an instructor and then its president for 21 years, has died. He was 87.
