ND state class A volleyball tournament: South defeats Dickinson
MINOT, N.D. — Fargo South High School’s volleyball team is still proving that anything is possible.
After an improbable comeback last week in the Eastern Dakota Conference tourney saved the season, five players recorded double-digit kills to help the Bruins to a 28-26, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20 victory against Dickinson in Thursday’s first round of the North Dakota Class A state tournament at the Minot State Dome.

Tolna, Grace City win Class A openers
Short and sweet was the story in Game 1, with Tolna tipping Cooperstown 5-3 in a pitcher’s duel.
Ross Severson sailed through seven innings on the mound for Tolna as they finished pool play 1-1 in a game that took one hour and 22 minutes.
Grace City and the Fargo-Moorhead Metros each played their first game of the tournament in the nightcap Thursday at Jack Brown Stadium.

Packers cruise
West Fargo’s Andrea Muller has been a key player for the Packers this season, but on Thursday, in the opening round of the state tournament, the junior was more than just key — she was the key.
Muller scored four goals and had an assist as West Fargo shocked the top-seeded Bismarck Century Patriots 5-1 at the Hillcrest Soccer Complex in Jamestown.

Stallman, Bruins edge St. Mary’s
Jillian Stallman was a playmaker for the Fargo Shanley girls soccer team the last few seasons.
Now she’s filling the same role for Fargo South.
The first-year Bruin midfielder finished with a goal and an assist to help two-time defending champion South to a 2-1 victory against Bismarck-St. Mary’s during the first round of the North Dakota state soccer tournament Thursday at Hillcrest Soccer Complex.

Jay bad-hopped: Century capitalizes on break
One bad bounce.
Jamestown High School was one out away from upsetting second-seeded Bismarck Century Thursday in the opening round of the West Region tournament at Jack Brown Stadium, but one bad bounce kept the Patriots alive.
Century’s Logan Rauhauser chopped a routine ball up the right side in the bottom of the seventh that could have ended the game but the ball took a strange hop over JHS first baseman Kasey Gengler’s head and into the outfield to score the game-tying run.

Century rolls to Class A title
Bismarck Century ended two decades of frustration, claiming the North Dakota girls Class A basketball title on Saturday night with a 60-50 win over Fargo South.
The Patriots claimed their first state title since 1990. Alexis Jacobs scored 20 points and the Patriots (23-2) went on a 16-0 run in the second half, turning a 35-32 deficit into a 48-35 lead.
