Wild Game Wrapped in Bacon on the Grill
Grilling usually isn't an activity most people associate with winter. But with temperatures in the 60s and hardly a lick of snow to be found, this isn't your typical Midwest winter day. In fact, if yo...

Elk Hunting: The Sounds of September
I sat on the porch of the shooting house at my local gun club; except for me the porch was empty. In front of me was a .22 range, a centerfire range and a pistol range - also empty. I had a gun for ea...

Elk dilemma continues on
One of the great success stories of wildlife conservation is the recovery of the Rocky Mountain elk or wapiti, which due largely to unregulated hunting was reduced to approximately 37,000 animals by 1907. Those surviving elk were found mostly in and around Yellowstone National Park.By Bernie Kuntz, Outdoors , May 07, 2010

Meat cutting a hearty chore
A friend of mine just returned to southwest Montana from his original home in the Belfield, N.D., area where he and his relatives made 510 pounds of various types of game sausage. It must have been something to witness — grinding up deer and elk meat, adding fat and spices in making five different types of sausage, all in keeping with the wild game meat harvest that takes place at this time of year.By Bernie Kuntz, Outdoors , December 11, 2009
Reality of time sinks in
The gentle climb to the rock outcrop goes well enough. It is the standing that tortures my arthritic knees, and finally I sit on the rock and rely on Loren and Troy, the two film guys, to warn me of any approaching elk. Earlier, Randy Newberg spotted two bulls in this basin, so he has circled around and is trying to push them our way.By Bernie Kuntz , November 20, 2009
Nervous feeling for upcoming elk hunt
My first big game hunt was for pronghorn antelope when I was 12, and I remember to this day my father driving his pickup, my mother sitting in the middle of the cab, me next to the passenger door, the headlights illuminating golden September grass and the gravel road. And I was nauseated from anxiety, almost to the point of throwing up. The pressure was on me to perform, and it almost was too much.By Bernie Kuntz, Outdoors , November 13, 2009

Authorities are seeking information on a bull elk killed in western Stutsman County last weekend. The animal was likely shot the morning of Nov. 7 about three miles west and two miles south of Woodworth, N.D., and abandoned in the field. Letter to the editor: Dorgan deserves credit for work on elk hunt issue
As a hunter, I’d love to help cull the elk herd in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Right now, the herd is too big and damaging the park, and letting hunters harvest a portion of it is a good idea.By Rep. Lyle Hanson , October 23, 2009
Va. may fill its hills with Rocky Mountain elk
More than 150 years after Virginia’s last native elk was killed, game officials may try to populate the state’s southwest corner with its bigger, buff-colored cousin — the Rocky Mountain elk. They say bringing back an elk subspecies could offer hunters another big-game animal and boost tourism in rugged southwest Virginia, but farmers fear it also could infect their livestock with diseases and damage crops. As it happens, some elk have already arrived.By By Steve Szkotak, The Associated Press , October 22, 2009
