Proponents of new library keep working after setback
Despite a ruling denying a request to purchase a site, proponents of a new library say they continue to pursue their cause. The James River Valley Library System had requested approval to purchase the Essentia (former Innovis) site for $690,000 pending fundraising or a tax vote in the future. The Jamestown City Council denied the request in a unanimous vote at its regular meeting April 4.By By Katie Ryan-Anderson, The Jamestown Sun , April 13, 2011

On March 22, Jamestown’s City Council voted 3-2 to prohibit the James River Valley Public Library Board from proceeding with site selection for a new and improved public library and community center. Letter to the editor: City leader deserves to have new library named for him
As Jamestown and Stutsman County inevitably move toward building a new combined library structure, I feel it necessary to incorporate the name of a humble man into the discussion on the subject of what we should call the new much-needed facility. Someone who clearly is a standout example of character, being a true father of Jamestown and having put efforts into not only the library project for many years, but currently serving on the City Council for more than 30 years, and a good time spent as our dignified mayor for nine-plus years.By Mark Grinavich , March 31, 2011
Letter to the editor: New library project will have to take a new direction
Webster’s dictionary defines “community” as “any group living in the same area who have interests, work in common.” All of us here in Stutsman County fit this description, although we do strain the definition from time to time over what should be the key interests, and what should be the work we pursue first. The recent City Council vote rejecting the James River Library System Board’s request for permission to purchase the Essentia site as the home of a new library is a perfect example of this and is worth examining if we are serious about being a healthy, working community.By Jim Nyland , March 28, 2011
Letter to the editor: Roads, sewer system higher priorities for residents
This is a response to a letter to the editor from Steven Anderson, from Valley City, Barnes County (The Jamestown Sun, March/21). While it’s nice he’s working with the James River Valley Library System to plan and promote a new library building for Jamestown and Stutsman County, it’s interesting, from digging into this Jamestown/Stutsman County project, that Anderson feels he understands the needs of our area.By Judy Graves , March 25, 2011

Letter to the editor: Hopefully residents will rally behind library proposal
My name is Steve Anderson, I am a graduate student with the University of Mary and we are working with the James River Valley Library System to help plan for and promote a new library for Jamestown and Stutsman County. As we have begun to dig into this project and understand the needs of the area, it has become quite apparent that a new library is needed.By Steven Anderson , March 21, 2011

Letter to the editor: Libraries give communities great return on investment
Although North Dakota has been spared the brunt of it, the recent poor economic conditions still have affected many. When you have no job, are struggling financially, or searching for food or rent money, most other things, including building a new library can seem unnecessary or unneeded. However, in reality, the opposite is true. The economic benefits and services a complete, up-to-date library can provide can make a substantial difference in the lives of individuals and our community during difficult times.By Jim Nyland , February 28, 2011
