Post office closures could hurt Hundreds of college students “zipped to Zap” in 1969, creating a population boom not seen since. With those numbers largely on the decline for decades, Zap now risks losing a status symbol tied to a different type of zip — its ZIP code. While the 58580 ZIP code itself would remain, Zap’s Main Street post office may not.

Communities worry post offices will be closed COMSTOCK, Minn. — Peggy Butenhoff was the postmaster here for 25 years. Now retired, Butenhoff said the best part of her job was the people. “Having grown up here, it’s like seeing family every day. People that moved in became like family as well,” said Butenhoff, who still lives in this hamlet of just under 100 people in southern Clay County. The news earlier this week that the post office is on a list of sites the Postal Service is looking at closing worries Butenhoff.

Post office may close 1 in 10 outlets

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Postal Service is considering closing more than 1 in 10 of its retail outlets. The financially troubled agency announced Tuesday that it will study 3,653 local offices, branches and stations for possible closing. But many of those may be replaced by what the service is calling Village Post Offices in which postal services are offered in local stores, libraries or government offices.

Rural residents: Keep post offices The Cleveland school closed in 1982. The town’s restaurants went out of business in the past couple of years. Along the way, even the bar in town shut down. Now the Cleveland Post Office is being considered for shutdown. The U.S. Postal Service gathered information at a hearing Tuesday at the Cleveland Fire Hall as part of the review process.

In her book “A Biography of U.S. Senator Milton R. Young,” Andrea Winkjer Collins writes of the long term beneficial work Young did for Jamestown. It is because of Young and his political power that we have the Jamestown Dam. It was Young who was influential in bringing industrial manufactures with ties to the military to North Dakota and to Jamestown bringing us Western Gear (now Goodrich) to provide jobs for the area.

It turns out that sometimes the weather does affect mail delivery. Severe winter weather and difficult travel hampered delivery Wednesday in North Dakota, South Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.
