English skills taking off with pilots GRAND FORKS — Aviation leaders are reporting success with a decade-long push to make sure pilots and air traffic controllers around the globe are proficient in English — the official language of aviation worldwide. The International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, began working on English proficiency requirements in 2000, four years after a midair collision over India between a Saudi airliner and a Kazakh cargo plane killed 349 people. Investigators said an English language barrier was a contributing factor to the crash.

Demand prompts CMA training

Following up on the success of its training skills class that so far has turned out 100 new certified nursing assistants for health care facilities in the region, the Medical Leaders Roundtable is adding a certified medication assistant class to its roster. The roundtable and health care-related classes came out of a need uncovered in the Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corp.’s training center project. JSDC Administrative Program Coordinator Lisa Hicks co-chairs the roundtable, which has representatives from Jamestown College, local nursing homes, Jamestown Hospital and the high school.

Pfc. Richard P. Olson of the North Dakota Army National Guard completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Okla., on Aug. 6, 2009, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., on Oct. 15, 2009. He attended the course of 21E Heavy Equipment Operator and is now a member of the 815th Engineer Company in Edgeley, N.D.
